The death of Collingwood Magpies great Billy Picken has sent the Australian Football League (AFL) into sorrow.

On Saturday night, the Collingwood Football Club and the rest of the Australian Football League (AFL) community are in a state of sorrow following the passing of former players Billy Picken and Con Britt.

Concerning Billy Picken:

Picken, who passed away at the age of 66, was a member of the Magpies from 1974 until 1983 when he made the move to Sydney, where he played for the 1984 and 1985 seasons. He played a total of 207 games with the Magpies. The illustrious centre-half back finished his career back with the Magpies in 1986, capping off a brilliant career that later saw him inducted into Collingwood’s Hall of Fame (2006) and named in the club’s Team of the Century. In 1986, the legendary centre-half back finished his career back with the Magpies (1997). Britt, who passed away at the age of 74, played 110 games for Collingwood between the years 1996 and 1973, with his first game wearing the Magpies’ colours coming in Round 16. In 1972, he was given the honour of being the club’s Most Determined Player, and club president Jeff Browne referred to him as a “skilful player.”

Tributes paid to Billy Picken:

Browne, speaking on behalf of Collingwood on Saturday night, issued a statement in which he paid tribute to both Billy Picken and the other player who passed away earlier that day. “The Collingwood Football Club is profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of Billy Picken and Con Britt and we express our condolences to their families and friends,” stated Browne. “We are deeply sorry to learn of the passing of Billy Picken and Con Britt.”

“Billy was a spectacular player, a dashing defender who was able to take a tremendous grab, and a guy who performed incredibly well in finals contests.”

Billy quickly became a fan favourite soon after making his debut, as seen by the large number of Collingwood supporters who wore the number 25 on the back of their Black and White sweaters and duffle coats. “He will be remembered as one of the greatest centre-half backs of his generation and as one of the best players in the history of the Collingwood Football Club,” The majority of Con Britt’s career was spent playing across the half-forward line and down the wing. He was a talented player who did a little bit of everything. Collingwood fans were blown away by his quickness and strength when he attacked the football.

“Con will be remembered as a whole-hearted player who gave his best every time he pulled on the number 27 guernsey, despite the fact that he retired at the age of 26 due to a career-ending knee injury,” The Australian Football League community was quick to turn to social media to express their condolences and pay their respects to both players.
