A former Premier League star has reportedly lost £782,000 following the failure of his restaurant business.

According to The Sun, the 33-year-old – who announced his retirement from professional football on October 30 – was told of the loss by liquidators.

The player opened a Manchester-based restaurant called FoodWell in 2018 but, after racking up £2million in debt, it went bust last year.

Nevertheless, that didn’t stop Danny Drinkwater from trying his luck with another eatery – purchasing 70 per cent of restaurant business Firefly.

However, The Sun have reported that Drinkwater’s latest restaurant business is currently £1.1m in debt.

The former England midfielder announced his retirement from professional football last week at the age of 33.

The midfielder was part of the Leicester side that remarkably won the Premier League title in the 2015-16 season.

Capped three times by England at senior level, Drinkwater started out at Manchester United but didn’t make a competitive first-team appearance for the Red Devils, instead taking in loan spells at Huddersfield, Cardiff, Watford and Barnsley.

Drinkwater then moved to Leicester in 2012 and helped them to earn promotion from the Championship before winning the Premier League. In total he played 218 times for the Foxes.

A move to Chelsea followed in 2017 but Drinkwater’s time at Stamford Bridge was hugely frustrating as he made only 23 appearances in five years.

Drinkwater featured in Chelsea’s run to the FA Cup final in 2018 but missed the final against United through injury as the Blues prevailed.

Much of his spell at Chelsea was spent out on loan as he represented Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa and Reading.

Drinkwater was released in 2022 and then retired after over a year without a club.
