There had been plenty of speculation that the San Francisco 49ers were ready to move on from third-year quarterback Trey Lance.
On Friday night, those rumors were put to rest, as the Dallas Cowboys pulled off a trade for the much-maligned Lance. The price was a fourth-round pick.
All things gone wrong in Cali
Nothing has gone right on the gridiron for Lance since the 49ers made him the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
It was clear from the get-go that Lance was a project and needed coaching and reps to fulfill his potential, especially coming out of a non-Division I school. That was a big reason the 49ers were heavily considering Mac Jones with the selection, since he was more “pro ready”.
With veteran Jimmy Garoppolo ahead of him on the depth chart, Lance was the primary backup but appeared in six games and started two due to injuries to Garoppolo. Lance was decent as a passer, hitting on some big plays and flashing his running ability.
He showed enough to get the starting job for the 2022 season, but he suffered an ankle injury that forced him out of action for the whole year. While Lance watched and Garoppolo once again went down with injury, Brock Purdy led the Niners to the NFC Championship and essentially shut the door on both quarterbacks’ 49ers careers.
The final nail in the coffin for Lance was Sam Darnold, a bust with the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers, winning the backup quarterback job over Lance. At that point, it was clear the two sides had to move on.
A new dawn in Dallas
Now, Lance will get the opportunity to back up Dak Prescott if he can beat out Cooper Rush and Will Grier in competition. Prescott has drawn plenty of criticism for his 2022 season and his propensity to not dominate in the playoffs.
Lance could find himself with a shot at a starting job in 2024 if everything breaks right for him, for once.
