Wrexham bounced back from a worrying injury to star striker Paul Mullin to see off a youthful Manchester United side 3-1 in San Diego.

Mullin was involved in a nasty clash with United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop inside the opening 10 minutes and after a prolonged period of treatment was forced off while wearing an oxygen mask.

There was plenty of concern for Mullin, and manager Phil Parkinson later revealed he had suffered a punctured lung, but the players responded well to the setback on the pitch.

They took the lead just before the half hour mark through Elliot Lee as he arrived in the box to finish a fine cross from the right flank.

The League Two outfit doubled their advantage shortly before half-time thanks to a close range header from defender Aaron Hayden after a long throw, but Marc Jurado gave United hope by pulling a goal back on the stroke of half-time.

Any chance of United getting back into the game was quickly extinguished just two minutes into the second half, though, when captain Dan Gore was shown a red card for a studs-up challenge.

It looked a fair decision on first viewing, but replays suggested a red was harsh, and Gore was clearly devastated as he left the pitch.

Wrexham made the most of their one-man advantage, as substitute Sam Dalby wrapped up the victory with a simple finish.

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney was in attendance and watched on from the stands, but will be worried about Mullin’s condition ahead of the new season.

The 28-year-old scored 38 goals last season to fire Wrexham to promotion but now faces a spell on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, it was a disappointing night for United’s youngsters, with few taking the chance to impress manager Erik ten Hag.

Jonny Evans started the game at centre back, but looked rusty as Wrexham helped themselves to three goals.

The first team will be back in action on Wednesday night when they face Spanish giants Real Madrid.
