The Sundance Film Festival has announced its line-up for its 40th incarnation.
The 2024 fest will see new entries from fest regulars like Steven Soderbergh, Lana Wilson and Richard Linklater, while also debuting titles from new directors with 40 percent of the features program coming from first time feature filmmakers. A-list talent like Kirsten Stewart, Pedro Pascal, Lucy Liu, Laura Linney and Woody Harrelson star in fest films, while onscreen talents like Jesse Eisenberg and Chiwetel Ejiofor continue their forays into directing.
This year’s fest marks the first with Eugene Hernandez at the helm as festival director. “This will be my 30th time attending the festival,” Hernandez tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Now, to have this different vantage point, I was able to witness exactly what goes into [the festival] I have loved and cared about for so long.”
The festival had over 17,000 submission, with programmers noting this is the most in the history of the festival. International submissions significantly outpaced those of U.S. productions.
The U.S. Dramatic Competition section feature ten titles (down from 13 last year), with the Eisenberg-directed and Emma Stone-produced A Real Pain and the Stewart and Steven Yeun two-hander Love Me among those vying for the top festival prize. In the Premieres section there is the Focus Features satire The American Society of Magical Negroes, Soderbergh’s Presence, and Captain Marvel filmmakers Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s Freaky Tales, starring Pascal.
When asked if the actors strike, which paused all productions, caused a noticeable difference in submissions, director of programming Kim Yutani tells THR, “Based on the number it would appear not. We saw a huge increase in international submissions, which I would attribute to the amount of outreach we do.” Yutani adds that “there were some films that got interim agreements and some of those films came into us towards the end of our process, like Didi and Ghost Light, which were pleasant surprises. It was kind of a wild year.”
In terms of trends, programmers noticed submissions that grappled with the world of artificial intelligence, including docs Love Machina and Eternal You. Elsewhere, in the New Frontier titles, Eno, about musician Brian Eno, was described by Hernandez as being the first “generative documentary” that “will actually be different every time you see it.”
In continuing with the biodoc trend of years past (the 2023 iteration of the fest had stand-out docs on Brooke Shields and Michael J. Fox), Sundance will have non-fiction offerings on Frida Kahlo (Frida), Christopher Reeve (Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story), basketball star Sue Bird (Sue Bird: In The Clutch), and Devo (Devo), among other notable figures. Elsewhere in docs is Will Ferrell, who is seen in the doc Will & Harper that follows Ferrell as he takes a cross-country roadtrip with his friend and SNL writer Harper Steele after Steele comes out as a trans woman.
As for the filmmakers, in the U.S. dramatic competition section, four of the 10 films were directed by one or more female filmmakers and 1 of the 10 was directed by one or more filmmakers who identify as nonbinary or gender-nonconforming, according to the fest. Five of the 10 films were directed by one or more filmmakers who identify as a person of color.
On opening day, Sundance will be hosting its Opening Night Gala with a focus on the fest’s 40th anniversary. Christopher Nolan, whose film Memento premiered at Sundance in 2001, will be receiving an honor, along with Past Lives director Celine Song and documentarian Maite Alberdi. “We are excited to have that night be about celebrating the past with the present,” Sundance Institute CEO Joana Vicente. “It’s a moment to recent on the history and also embrace the possibility in what Sundance, I think, does beter than anyone which is be a place to launch new career.”
Sundance will take place from Jan. 18 to 28 and, like last year, select titles, including all competition titles, will be made available online. The online titles will be available from Jan 25 to 28.
“From the first edition in 1985, Sundance Film Festival has aimed to provide a space to gather, celebrate, and engage with risk-taking artists that are committed to bringing their independent visions to audiences — the Festival remains true to that goal to this day,” said Sundance Institute founder Robert Redford in a statement. “It continues to evolve, but its legacy of showcasing bold work that starts necessary conversations continues with the 2024 program.”
