Ten months later, she won a World Cup downhill in Canada with the words “Ciao Mamma” scrawled on face tape to protect herself from 1-degree temperatures. She was 20 years old. Since then, no one under 21 has won a World Cup downhill.

The World downhill silver medalist in 2005 died Wednesday at her home in Solato, located near Brescia, according to the Italian Winter Sports Federation.
Between her two World Cup victories, Fanchini competed in three Olympics, finishing 12th in the downhill in 2014. Because of her condition, she could not compete in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

Fanchini died the same day that fellow Italian Marta Bassino won the super-G at the world championships in Meribel, France. Two days after, another former teammate, Federica Brignone, won gold in the combined.
