Although the US Women’s National Team advanced to the knockout stage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, fans are calling for coach Vlatko Andonovski to be sacked.
The USWNT started the tournament with a win over Vietnam, before draws in their next two matches against the Netherlands and Portugal.
The 0-0 draw with Portugal was even to see them through to the next round, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing, as the team have only scored four goals in the three matches.
Their struggles in front of goal, as well as what some believe has been less than inspired performances, has led fans to call for Andonovski to be fired. This, despite the 46-year-old guiding the team through to the next round.
Fans want Andonovski out
“You’re supposed to be the guy who prepares the team,” wrote “one fan on social media. “I just haven’t seen it at all.”
Another wasn’t happy with Andonovski’s tactics, stating: “Fire Vlatko… Tactically one of the worst USWNT performances I’ve ever seen.”
Another fan believe the program has stagnated, writing: “Several first-choice players are injured and missing this World Cup and the overall program is stagnating for multiple reasons, but on some level I think it matters that the USWNT played with constant fire for Jill Ellis bc they hated her and Vlatko is just not that kind of coach.”
Andonovski’s future will likely depend on how the USWNT do in the round of 16.
While their opponent is unknown at this time, the fact they finished second in Group E behind the Netherlands means they will likely play Sweden, a team they have struggled against in the past.
