Fredro Starr is an American Rapper. Fredro Starr is an East Coast hip-hop artist who was a founding member of the ’90s rap group “Onyx”. He is also an actor and has appeared in the 2001 film “Save the Last Dance”.

Early Life

Fredro Starr was born on April 18, 1971, in New York City, New York, USA. He is 52 years old and is under the astrological sign, Aries. He holds American nationality and his full name is Fred Lee Scruggs Jr.

His father’s name is Gene Simmons and his mother’s name is Shannon Tweed. He also has a brother whose name is David Scruggs. He was born in Kings County Hospital Center and grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn. When he was 13 years old, he along with his brother moved to South Jamaica, Queens.

Regarding Starr’s educational background and qualifications, he attended John Adams High School between the years 1984 and 1988. Other than this, no further information regarding his education has come forward until now. However, considering his age, he must have graduated from university as well if he attended one.

Career and Professional Life

Fredro Starr’s journey into the music world started with breakdancing after watching “Beat Street” in the year 1984. At that time, he went by the name Magic. Then, he went on to become a street poet after being inspired by “Krush Groove” and the style of LL Cool J in late 1985.

And, a year later, he was able to pick up a microphone on the basketball court in Baisley Park and rhymed along with his friends Cocheeks, Freaky Tah, Dot-a-Rock, Spank G, and Panama P.I. And, they didn’t let the challenging environment stop them from pursuing their dreams. Also, Fredro was popular as Kool Fredro at that time.

In the year 1986, Starr started cutting hair at “Nu Tribe Barbershop” in Queens and later went on to join his cousin Kirk Jones, aka Sticky Fingaz. They were able to serve a diverse clientele, including local drug dealers and celebrities like Kool G Rap.

It was the year 1992, and their lives changed when they heard their song “Throw Ya Gunz” on the radio. Around the same time, Fredro and Kirk, then popular as Trop, stood out in New York nightclubs with their green dreadlocks and Dr. Martens boots. In a Unkut interview, hip-hop artist B-1 highlighted his friendship with Fredro and Sticky, offering a glimpse into their dynamic presence in the city’s nightlife.

Likewise, after graduating in the year 1988 when he was 17 years old, he went on to find Onyx along with his classmates Big DS and Suavé. They were able to secure a deal with Profile Records a year later and caught the attention of Jam Master Jay in the year 1991.

With the addition of Fredro’s cousin Kirk Jones (Sticky Fingaz), Onyx signed with JMJ Records and achieved multi-platinum success with their debut album “Bacdafucup” in 1993, featuring the hit single “Slam”.

Despite challenges like the loss of their music producer B-Wiz, Onyx continued to make an impact with subsequent albums like “All We Got Iz Us” and “Shut ‘Em Down”, solidifying their place in hip-hop.

Starr went on to sign with Koch Records and dropped the mixtape “Firestarr” in the year 2000 followed by his debut album of the same name a year later. He was able to gain the nickname “Firestarr”. And, collaborating with Jill Scott, he contributed to the “Save the Last Dance” soundtrack.

In the year 2003, his album “Don’t Get Mad Get Money” was released. Later, he initiated the “100 Mad” movement in 2003, reflecting the enduring impact of Onyx globally. “100 Mad” released an album featuring notable artists in the year 2019.

Moreover, in the year 2011, Fredro was able to find “Mad Money Movement”, his label in Los Angeles, releasing projects like “Made In The Streets” and numerous Onyx albums. He went on to drop “Live 4Ever, Die 2Day”, his first solo project in a decade in the year 2013, followed by the release of “The Firestarr 2” album in 2018.

Notably, he was able to win a rap battle against Keith Murray in 2015. In the year 2020, he addressed the coronavirus situation with the release of the video “Fuck Corona” and the single “Corona Freestyle” on April 17.

Also, in the year 2006, Starr formed a new group, “Yung Onyx”, but the group later disbanded. In the year 2011, he released two children’s books: “Lil Freddy: The Red Sock” and “Lil Freddy: The Bully Kid”.

Acting Career

Fedro Starr was encouraged by his manager Jeff Harris to enter the acting scene, landing his debut role in the TV pilot “B Boys” in the year 1992. Shortly after, he was able to earn critical acclaim for his role as Bamboo in Forest Whitaker’s HBO film “Strapped” receiving a CableACE Award nomination for “Best Supporting Actor”.

He then continued to build his acting career with roles in notable films like “Clockers”. Abel Ferrara’s”, and “The Addiction”. And his first leading role in “Sunset Park” where he also co-wrote and performed the title track “Thangz Changed”. Also, his film credits further include “Ride,” “Light It Up,” and “Save the Last Dance”.

On top of that, Starr had notable TV roles, including on “Moesha” and HBO’s “The Wire”. He also was able to co-host “Dance 360” but the show was canceled after one season.

He even went on to appear on shows such as “NYPD Blue,” “Law & Order,” and “CSI: Miami”. Starr produced a documentary about Jam Master Jay and served as an Executive Consultant on the Lionsgate film “A Day In The Life,” in which he starred.

Furthermore, between the years 2009 and 2010, Fredro Starr was able to star in 12 episodes of the web series “Tales Of The Industry”. In the year 2012, he went on to take on a role in 20 episodes of “16 Bars with Fredro Starr”.

Additionally, he played the lead in the independent film “Diamond Ruff,” premiering in 2013. Then, in the year 2018, a movie titled “Firestarr 2” was filmed, featuring video clips for songs from his album of the same name.

Controversy

The Onyx and 50 Cent feud started at a 1998 concert when a rapper covered 50 Cent’s verse. Tensions rose again at the 2003 Vibe Awards, where Fredro Starr claimed 50 Cent initiated a confrontation. He went on to emphasize 50 Cent’s disrespect despite Onyx’s role in his breakthrough on the 1998 album “Shut ‘Em Down”. Then, in a 2008 interview, Starr reiterated his stance.

In a 2008 interview with C.O.D DVD (now Forbez DVD), Fredro discussed his connection with R&B singer Brandy. However, he later clarified, “I never intended to publicly disclose any intimate details or suggest anything inappropriate with her. It was a jest, and the media exaggerated the narrative. That’s all there is to it.”

Also, on September 18, 2012, Fredro Starr released a freestyle aimed at fellow New York City rapper DMX. Following the diss, DMX responded during a radio interview on September 26, 2012.

Relationship Status

Fedro Starr tied the knot with his wife in the year 2007. His wife’s name is Korina Longin Starr. The couple has three children together but their names are unknown as of now.
