The Magpies have endured a miserable December which has seen them exit Europe and the Carabao Cup, and they were beaten 3-1 by Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

According to ESPN, the Premier League champions have held formal talks with River Plater over the 17-year-old midfielder and the two clubs are nearing an agreement.

Echeverri has made just four appearances for River this season for a total of 72 minutes of football, but starred at the at the Under-17 World Cup last month.

Jesse Lingard has been offered to several clubs in France, but any move could reportedly be scuppered by Brexit rules.

The 31-year-old has been without a club since he left Nottingham Forest at the end of his contract last season.

Lingard has since trained with former club West Ham in the summer and also spent a month with Steven Gerrard‘s Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq – though both clubs decided not to sign the midfielder.

The defender has struggled for regular playing time at Old Trafford this season, making just five Premier League starts – with the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans often starting ahead of the 30-year-old.

This has led to speculation that he could leave the club, with reported interest from Saudi Arabia and former club Real Madrid – where he could potentially replaced the injured David Alaba.

The clause came to light in a 241-page deal document published on the New York Stock Exchange after it was announced on Christmas Eve that Ratcliffe is buying a quarter of the club and taking charge of football operations at Old Trafford.

It will take between four to six weeks for the 71-year-old to pass the Premier League’s first and proper person test, and for the NYSE to oversee the sale of 25 per cent of the club’s Class A shares that Ratcliffe will acquire from investors in addition to the 25 per cent of Class B shares he is buying from the Glazer family.
