William Shatner is scheduled to receive the Visual Effects Society Award for Creative Excellence at the 22nd annual VES Awards on Feb. 21 at The Beverly Hilton hotel.

The multihyphenate is best known for originating the role of Captain James T. Kirk in the classic Star TrekThe Original Series and returned as Kirk in seven Star Trek movies. He’s currently the host and executive producer of The UnXplained on the History Channel.

The Award for Creative Excellence, bestowed by the VES board of directors, recognizes individuals for their contributions to the art and science of the visual effects industry. The Society will honor Shatner for his work in the Star Trek franchise, “crafting an indelible cinematic legacy that continues to touch new generations of filmmakers, creatives and audiences.”

“With his portrayal of Captain Kirk, Shatner is the originator of one of the most iconic science fiction characters in history and has boldly taken audiences to the final frontier,” VES executive director Nancy Ward said, adding that Shatner “has been at the center point of compelling stories that use visual effects to enhance unforgettable storytelling for decades, and his work has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.”
