A-League player Angel Torres charged with rape, stalking and assault

Central Coast football star Angel Torres has been charged with rape, assault and stalking.

The 24-year-old Colombian was arrested at a Terrigal property on Monday “over the alleged sexual assault” of a 21-year-old woman, NSW Police confirmed.

He was taken to Gosford Police Station and charged with sexual intercourse without consent, aggravated sexual assault with deprivation of liberty, two counts of common assault and one of stalking, court records confirm.

Torres, who joined Central Coast at the start of this season and has scored 13 goals in 23 games, has been granted conditional bail and will front Gosford Local Court on May 6.

The Australian Professional Leagues, which runs the A-League, said Football Australia had imposed a no-fault suspension on Torres.

“It is important to note that in imposing this interim suspension Football Australia is making no finding of guilt or fault in respect of the alleged offences with which Mr Torres has been charged,” an APL spokesperson said.

“The APL will continue to work with all relevant stakeholders and won’t be making any further comment at this time.”

The Mariners have been contacted for comment.

Torres is a leading player in the team, which is vying to win the A-League Men’s premiership and retain their championship under coach Mark Jackson.

The team has just returned from Kyrgyzstan, where they drew 1-1 with Kyrgyz club Abdysh-Ata Kant in the first leg of their inter-zone playoff final of the AFC Cup. They then became stuck in the capital of Bishkek because of flooding at Dubai airport – an unexpected end to an almost 100,000km odyssey across several countries for Asia’s second-tier tournament.
