Police said he was carried away by a strong current after going for a swim with his wife, who had to watch in horror as a lifeguard attempted to revive her husband to no avail.

The pair raised the alarm as they slid into the water, and lifeguards rescued them both on jet skis.

Both were given CPR, and while his wife was able to be revived, the British man was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

The married couple were regular visitors in Goa and were on holiday for 15 days before the husband’s death, cops said.

Sources told local media the Briton had tied the knot with his wife a year and a half ago, the Mail reported.

An autopsy has been ordered after the tourist’s death was registered as “unnatural” by police.

The Sun has contacted the Foreign Office for comment.

Video footage shows Jyoti Sonar, 32, and her husband Mukesh sitting on a rock at the popular Bandra Bandstand promenade in Mumbai, India.

The couple laugh and hold on to each other as the sea pounds them and – despite being soaking wet – they refuse to withdraw to the shore.

Increasingly powerful waves come splashing against the boulder they are perched on as several passersbys can be seen observing the scene.

Around 90 seconds into the footage, Jyoti and Mukesh plunge into the water after a huge wave hits.

A child can be heard screaming “mummy, mummy” several times before the clip ends.

While her husband was saved by a bystander, Jyoti drowned in the high-tide waters.

Witnesses called the police after the incident on July 9 and a search and rescue operation was launched immediately.

The 32-year-old woman’s body was found 20 hours later.

Jyoti was taken to hospital where medics pronounced her dead upon arrival.
