Police have revealed they shot and killed a Tennessee student after he holed himself up in a high school bathroom with a gun and then opened fire on officers, injuring one of them.

Knoxville Police Officer Adam Willson is recovering in hospital after he was shot in the leg during the incident at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville on Monday afternoon.

Willson, who is a 20-year police veteran currently working as the school’s resource officer, underwent surgery for his gunshot wounds at the University of Tennessee Medical Center but is expected to survive.

The gunman student, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

It is not yet clear why the student brought a gun to the school and what his motive for the shooting is.

Police have not disclosed whether they believe the student had planned to self-harm or open fire on others.

The deadly incident erupted on Monday at about 3.15pm when police first received reports of a student with a gun.

It prompted a huge multi-agency law enforcement response, including the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, over fears it could have been a mass shooting.

Responding officers found the student holed up in one of the school’s bathrooms.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director David B. Rausch said officers had ordered the student to come out but he refused to do so.

The student opened fire on the officers when they entered the bathroom and struck Willson once in the upper leg.

One officer returned fire and fatally struck the student.

‘As officers entered the space, the suspect reportedly fired shots, striking an officer. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and has since been identified as a student at Austin-East,’ Rausch said.

‘It’s a sad day for Knoxville and it’s tough for Austin-East.’

Police detained another person immediately after the shooting but they are being considered a witness and not a suspect.

Willson was rushed to hospital to undergo surgery immediately after the shooting.

‘He is conscious and in good spirits… He’s going to be OK,’ Mayor Indya Kincannon told CBS News of the injured officer.

‘I thanked him for putting his life on the line to protect students and staff at the school. He said he’d rather be hurt than anybody else.’

Police had initially reported multiple gunshot victims.

Asked about the overwhelming police response to a call that came in just before afternoon dismissal, Knoxville Police Chief Eve Thomas said: ‘We have a student, a school incident. It’s our worst fear, an active shooter in a school.’

Rausch refused to call the incident a school shooting and instead referred to it as a ‘officer-involved shooting’.

Austin-East High School was locked down following the gunfire and parents who rushed to the scene were directed to pick up their children at a rear entrance.

Police later established a reunification site for students and their parents at a baseball field.

The school will remain closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A mother who had been separated from her daughter was waiting near the school and told reporters she was greatly relieved to receive a text message from the girl that she was safe.

The Austin-East community has been shaken by gun violence this year.

Four other students at the school were killed in recent months in off-campus shootings in the city.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting.

Agents from the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting.
