Mail Sport’s Sami Mokbel answers all the big questions regarding Tottenham and Arsenal, including the latest on Gabriel Jesus‘ injury.

Pundits like Gary Neville continue to write off Tottenham’s title chances. Are they right to do so or can Spurs maintain their title charge?

The job Ange Postecoglou has done is nothing short of phenomenal. Heung-min Son has taken on the captaincy brilliantly.

What a signing James Maddison has been. Ricky van de Ven – wow! If Tottenham can keep their best players fit then they can stay towards the top of the table.

But injuries and suspensions will dictate whether that is possible. They can challenge, for sure. But the likes of Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool will fancy their chances of hauling Tottenham back.

Declan Rice could play a part against West Ham tonight for the first time since his move. Ten games into the league season just how good has he been and could he be the difference maker for Arsenal in the title race this season after their drop-off last year?

It was Rice or bust for Arteta in the summer. The Arsenal manager’s judgement has been spot on. He didn’t want anyone else and it is clear to see why. He has slotted in at Arsenal seamlessly.

Not just on the pitch, although his performances have been brilliant. But he has immediately become a leader in the dressing room.

Vastly popular with his team-mates, Rice will captain Arsenal one day – Arteta certainly believes he can. He is a likeable guy, polite, friendly and caring. People respond to that.

Is there any concern within Arsenal over David Raya’s start at the club? And what does Aaron Ramsdale need to do to get past the Spaniard?

Arteta has been pretty clear on his support – at least publicly – for Raya. The head coach’s intention was always for Raya to become his No 1 once he arrived from Brentford.

There have been a few uncomfortable moments for Raya in recent weeks but in my opinion it will take more than that for Arteta to have any second thoughts. Arteta has made his decision and to backtrack now would not ring true with how the Spanish manager tends to operate.

For now, Ramsdale will have to play a waiting game. He will likely start against West Ham tonight and a good performance would certainly help his cause. But it’s been clear in recent weeks that Arteta prefers Raya. It’s likely to remain that way right now.

Where does Eddie Nketiah stand at Arsenal after his hat-trick at the weekend?

Right now Nketiah is an important player for Arteta. He is scoring goals consistently and his all-round game is improving. England have called him up, too. Crucially, for Arsenal.

When everyone is fit, having Jesus and Nketiah allows Arteta to rest and rotate. But long term, particularly with the club in the market for a new centre forward, Nketiah’s future is likely to be called into question. There will be no shortage of takers from the Premier League for Nketiah.

What is the latest on Gabriel Jesus’ injury?

There is an obvious concern regarding Jesus’s hamstring heading into the next few days. Featuring in the Carabao Cup against West Ham tonight was always unlikely – but if there is a chance Jesus can be available for Newcastle at the weekend then that’s the game the club’s medical team will be focusing on.

As ever with hamstring injuries, they can be risky – and given Jesus’ importance Arsenal will be loathed to compound the injury. But by all accounts Jesus’ recovery is going well but whether or not he can make Newcastle remains to be seen.

Mikel Arteta on Declan Rice’s West Ham return

Declan Rice’s return to West Ham on Wednesday will be a ‘beautiful moment’ according to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

The 24-year-old moved across London for a club-record £105million in the summer. Rice, who had been at the Hammers since the age of 14, captained the club to their first major trophy for 43 years in June in the Europa Conference League final, the last of his 245 games there.

Ahead of Wednesday’s last-16 Carabao Cup tie, Arteta said: ‘He’s fit and can be involved. It will be his first time back at his old club and a beautiful moment for him.
