The Minnesota Vikings are 0-3 so far in 2023, but it’s certainly not because of Justin Jefferson. The superstar wide receiver is off to yet another torrid start, gaining 458 yards on 27 receptions through three games.
In the Vikings’ last game, Jefferson made an incredible play with his team down in the 4th quarter. He caught a bullet from Kirk Cousins then outran the Los Angeles Chargers defense for the go-ahead score. Minnesota ended up losing in heartbreaking fashion, but the touchdown was a talking point in the aftermath.
What is Justin Jefferson’s best trait?
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell delved into the details when talking about the play.
Just the way he went in there fearless. He doesn’t know [a defender isn’t there to hit him]. He just knows he’s running an in-cut there and can show up within the rhythm and timing of Kirk. That is why he was able to catch and run through that so effortlessly… for him to score on that it is just a testament to you’ve got to play a certain style with how fast the NFL game is to maximize those opportunities like that one.
Toughness has not generally been a characteristic of the relatively lanky Jefferson, but it’s something that he possesses and isn’t talked about enough. Back in Week 2, Cousins highlighted Jefferson’s “fearlessness” as one of his most important traits.
Among many traits, the trait that I think might be his best is he’s pretty fearless. He catches the ball and people are all around him… guys get alligator arms and they hear footsteps: that’s just not him. He runs through it… I’m not trying to put him in those situations where he’s getting hit and having to hear footsteps a lot, but when he does, he tends to make the play, hold onto the ball.

Jefferson has done all of his damage in the NFL with Cousins as his quarterback. The two have developed an undeniable on-field relationship. Though there have been whispers that Jefferson could ask for a trade soon given the Vikings’ slow start to the season, it doesn’t seem like he wants to separate from his trusty quarterback just yet.
