Rival fans have stuck the knife into Liverpool after the Reds’ shock loss to Atalanta on Thursday night saw fans seek refunds on their trips to Dublin for the Europa League final on May 22.

Liverpool gave one of their worst performances under Jurgen Klopp as they fell to a 3-0 to the Italian side at Anfield in the first-leg of their quarter-final tie.

It was a result few saw coming and the manager admitted his team ‘lost the plot’. Supporters had been dreaming of an exciting final between Klopp’s side and Xabi Alonso‘s Bayer Leverkusen in the Irish capital next month.

Liverpool fans confident of reaching the showpiece know their side needs another miraculous European comeback and those who booked flights and hotels in Dublin face a dilemma over keeping the faith or scrambling for their money back. One wrote: ‘F**k me Liverpool, this is the worst I’ve ever seen you play. Looks like that Dublin trip in May is cancelled now.’

Another added: ‘Honestly what the f*** is this. I get that we needed to rotate but acting like this was a f***ing pre-season friendly is a joke. Pathetic Liverpool. Best get my Dublin hotels cancelled.’

The defeat came just four days after their draw with rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, which has threatened to de-rail their league title charge.

Following the loss to Atalanta, rival fans – Red Devils supporters in particular – took to social media to poke fun at Klopp’s side, with a plethora of memes emerging online.

‘The boy behind Liverpool’s downfall, show my starboy some respect,’ one fan posted on X, formerly Twitter, accompanied by two photos of teenage sensation Kobbie Mainoo – after his goal against the Reds last week.

Manchester United have broken Liverpool. You love to see it,’ added another.

A third United fan posted: ‘Klopp leaves Liverpool without beating Ten Hag even once,’ accompanied by a series of laughing emojis and Klopp’s face edited onto a baby being held by Ten Hag – strangely ignoring the 7-0 demolition of the Dutchman’s team at Anfield last year.

More supporters pointed to the run-in being Klopp’s last as manager after eight years in charge, and it seemingly not going completely to plan.

Having won the Carabao Cup with an injury-hit side in sensational fashion earlier this year, there were hopes of winning the quadruple for Liverpool with the FA Cup, Europa League and Premier League still to play for.

A frustrating FA Cup exit to United followed, however, before drawing with the Red Devils in the league then losing to Atalanta in Europe.

‘Hope Klopp farewell tour is not just with the carabao cup for Liverpool Football Club before saying goodbye,’ one fan posted on X, accompanied by a video of a Klopp lookalike struggling on the floor in frustration.

Another wrote: ‘Good morning Liverpool fans. How’s Klopp’s Quadruple season coming along? This is where you’ll run out of tears. Don’t say we didn’t warn you,’ shared with Liverpool’s tricky upcoming schedule.

A third, targeting captain Virgil van Dijk, wrote: ‘Van Dijk trying to stop that cross for 2nd goal with his aura,’ accompanied by a video of WWE’s The Rock.

Reds fans were also mocked for cancelling trips to Dublin, with one fan sharing an X-rated video of a person at demanding money back from a cashier and joking that it represents Liverpool supporters on the back of the defeat.

A second posted: ‘That hotel in Dublin is getting cancelled,’ while another wrote: ‘But is Dublin big enough to host all the Liverpool fans heading over for the Europa League final?’

The Reds face a hefty task to turn around the tie next week in Italy but will back themselves to do so having secured some memorable comebacks in Europe during Klopp’s reign.

It was a baffling performance, with Klopp reflecting: ‘It was a really bad game, oh my God.

‘We started really well and then didn’t continue. Before they even scored, we just lost the plot a little bit.

‘We were everywhere and nowhere. Midfield was spread like that, right and left.

‘I didn’t recognise it a bit, it was really quite strange.’

He went on to respond to questioning of his team selection: ‘I get the question 100 per cent, if we lose a game, that’s how it is – the changes. But one of the reasons I would do exactly the same again is because if we want to be good in the rest of the season, we have to make changes.

‘I am responsible for this result first, I know that. But the decision (about the starting line-up) would remain the same.’

In the Premier League, they are second in the table, behind Arsenal on goal difference with seven games left to play.

This weekend they will take on Crystal Palace at Anfield, hoping to regain top spot with reigning champions Manchester City now favourites to lift the title.
