It took more than 200 days for the NFL to finally return to our screens. The 104th NFL season is about to begin and, as always, it promises to be an intense and exciting battle to reach the Super Bowl, but only one team can get their hands on the famed Vince Lombardi trophy.

The kick off comes this Thursday, with a showdown between the reigning champions Kansas City Chiefs and a revamped Detroit Lions. The venue will be the iconic Arrowhead Stadium where the atmosphere will be superb.

On Sunday, in Foxborough, the New England Patriots will honor Tom Brady, who will be at Gillette Stadium for the first time as a fan. It’s the first NFL season since Brady retired.

The Chiefs have a target on their back

The dominance of the Kansas City Chiefs in recent years is undeniable, as they have won two of the last four Super Bowls and also lost one (2021, to Brady‘s Buccaneers).

With Patrick Mahomes playing at a level perhaps never seen before and with one of the best coaches in history in Andy Reid, they are the favorites to defend their championship and become a dynasty, or at least that’s how Mahomes sees it.

“To be a dynasty we need to win at least three Super Bowls,” he stated.

Same faces, but in new uniforms.

For this new season there are several top players who decided to change teams and from now on we will have to get used to seeing them in a new uniform.

The most striking case is undoubtedly that of Aaron Rodgers, who after 18 years in Green Bay decided to go to the Big Apple to play for the New York Jets.

The four-time MVP will be looking to deliver a Super Bowl to a franchise that hasn’t won one since 1968 and that in the last decades has lived a real nightmare.

Other notable movers

Similar names that stand out are:

  • Derek Carr, who left the Raiders after several disappointing seasons to try his luck with a New Orleans Saints franchise that since the retirement of Drew Brees has not found a good QB.
  • DeAndre Hopkins, who after a difficult time with the Cardinals is now with the Titans at the age of 31 and seeking to return to superstar status.
  • Jimmy Garoppolo, who with the 49ers came very close to getting a ring, and who will now play with the Raiders in Las Vegas.
  • Zeke Elliot, who after several poor seasons with the Cowboys has gone to the Patriots where Bill Belichick will look to give his career one last shot in the arm.

The battle for the AFC

While Kansas City, Cincinnati and Buffalo remain the big names in the AFC, there could be surprises with the Miami Dolphins or the Denver Broncos.

In both cases it will depend on the quarterback, if Tua Tagovailoa can stay healthy and if Russell Wilson can rediscover his past form under new coach Sean Payton.

The NFC could hold some surprises

In terms of the teams that could make a leap in quality in this conference, there are two in particular.

Firstly, the Lions, a team that last year showed that they can be very dangerous. They are gradually improving, and with Aidan Hutchinson on defense in addition to Jared Goff throwing to Amon-Ra St. Brown, they can beat any team in a one-off game.

On the other hand, there are the Dallas Cowboys, a team that always promises a lot, but always delivers very little.

In theory they have all the pieces and tools to compete to win this conference, but when it comes to the playoffs the team doesn’t perform as well as it should.

This season could be Dak Prescott‘s last chance with the Cowboys. So, everything is ready for the excitement to return to the gridiron and the kick off of the new NFL season.
