With the tide from the sea, there are points where they are gasping for breath through the crate and fully submerged waiting for their next access to air.

In the clip Joel shouts to them as they are in the water: ‘Okay you’ve been in there now for 20 minutes, we’re going to lower the cage!

‘Who is going to drop first, who wants it the most, all 10 still in this game. The water is starting to go all the way over Matthew’s head now. Nathan is spluttering.’

Viewers can tune in on Sunday night on BBC1 to see how they get on in the scary challenge.

It comes after at the end of October the BBC was in meltdown after its big-money prime-time show Survivor bombed in the ratings.

The reality series, which debuted on Saturday October 28 at 8.25pm and is understood to have cost the BBC £30 million, pulled in just 2.6 million viewers – just over half the 4.5 million who tuned in for Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel the previous Saturday.

Survivor also failed to take advantage of the 7 million-strong audience who watched Strictly Come Dancing which aired beforehand.

Sunday’s repeat dropped to 2.2 million viewers, and was beaten by a repeat of the Antiques Roadshow on BBC Two.

BBC chiefs moved David Attenborough’s Planet Earth III from its Sunday 8pm slot to make way for Survivor as it was deemed such a huge priority.

Executives were then in crisis talks to work out how they could boost the ratings following an exhausting advertising campaign which has seen it plugged on the channel since July.

An insider told the Mail: ‘It’s crazy. BBC One had a winning Saturday and Sunday night schedule that would have seen it safely through to Christmas – and the panicking bosses just ripped it up to make room for a show that cost so much of licence-payers’ money that they could not afford for it to flop.

‘They even moved Sir David Attenborough from his traditional 8pm slot.

‘It is terrible news for the BBC, it is an absolute disaster. It cost a fortune and it is just not appealing to the masses – conversations are now taking place as to what can be done to turn things around, quickly.’

Viewers told how they found the new series ‘dull’ and ‘boring’ as they took to social media to lambast the programme, made by production company Banijay.

One posted on X, formerly Twitter: ‘I’m bored already #Survivor,’ while another added: ‘Good grief. Is this really what the # BBC think the great British public want to watch on a Saturday night?’

Another critic wrote: ‘#Survivor on BBC One is c***. Gave it 20 minutes and it’s dull. Bring back #TheWheel.’

Survivor sees 18 Britons taken to the Dominican Republic where they are marooned in a tropical location and divided into two tribes, competing against each other in a range of physical and mental challenges for reward or immunity.
