Vlatko Andonovski’s time as manager of the US Women’s National team looks to be all but over after hopes of ‘three-peating’ (winning their third consecutive World Cup) were crushed after being defeated 5-4 by Sweden in a penalty shootout.
Having achieved a podium finish at every tournament they’ve played at up until now, the team’s exit at round 16 is their worst result at a World Cup.
Andonovski was asked about his future after the historic defeat to Sweden. “I never came into this job with the mindset to try and save my job. I’ve always been focused on doing the best possible job and preparing this team for the challenges that they’ve had in front of them and preparing them to represent their country in the best possible way. My focus has always been on this and it will never change. No matter what happens in the future, that’s how I will approach this job or any other job.”
Early signs of mutiny
There have been signs of mutiny from fans as early as the group stages. The ‘Andonovski out’ movement has been brewing for several weeks now after woeful performances in their first three games against Vietnam, the Netherlands and Portugal. He has been ruthlessly criticized for his tactical ineptness and uninspiring player management over the course of the tournament.
Andonovski took charge in October 2019 shortly after the team’s triumph in France, succeeding two-time World Cup winning coach Jill Ellis.
The Macedonia American coach has had mixed success during his time at the helm, leading the national team to the quarterfinals of the 2020 Olympics (they lost to Canada by a goal to nil) and round 16 of the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. His only piece of silverware came when his team won the CONCACAF W Championship in 2022.
Unwanted records
Andonovski also has several unfortunate records to his name. In July 2021, a three-nil hammering by Sweden meant the USA’s 44-game unbeaten run was brought to a halt.
After losing 2-1 to Germany in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in November last year, the USWNT also suffered three consecutive losses for the first since 1993. The match put an end to their 71-match unbeaten streak on home turf.
After a disastrous World Cup campaign, the USWNT needs a reset, starting from the manager. As of now, there is now clear candidate to replace him.
