Two inseparable cats are looking for a new home after their previous owner struggled to look after them due to the rising cost of living.

The RSPCA was asked to help the two cats, Dave and Billy, after their owner unsuccessfully tried to treat the cats’ flea allergy. One of the cats has been left with facial scarring as a result.

He said he was unable to afford the ongoing cost of caring for the cats and there were concerns their welfare could be further compromised if they stayed. The pair, who snuggle up together and take comfort in each other, have been looked after at the RSPCA’s Great Ayton Animal Centre in Middlesborough, North Yorkshire since November.

They have made a good recovery, although sadly no-one has yet come forward to offer them a new home in the five months since they’ve been there. The RSPCA says Dave and Billy’s story is not uncommon as the cost of living has left many pet owners feeling they have no other choice but to rehome their animals, with a growing number of people finding keeping pets more expensive and worrying about the costs of feeding them.

RSPCA Inspector Lucy Green, said: “The owner had tried his best to treat Billy and Dave and their living environment but the situation wasn’t improving. A welfare assistance voucher was offered but he said he couldn’t afford ongoing veterinary care and wanted to sign them over.

“It was a sad situation – and one that we are seeing all too often in the current climate – but we would much rather people seek advice and support rather than letting a welfare situation continue to escalate.”

Both cats are about seven years old. White and black Billy, who still has marks around his eyes from the sore skin he had when he arrived, can be a little shy to start with but once he knows you he will come over and sit on your lap for a fuss and a cuddle. Dave, who is mainly black with white markings, is a little more outgoing and curious, a spokesperson for the RSPCA explained.

The pair, who are never far away from each other and love snuggling up together in each other’s beds, are looking for a quiet home with no hustle and bustle.

Great Ayton Cattery Supervisor Beverley Dunn said: “Billy and Dave are beautiful cats who love their home comforts and have come to us in sad circumstances. They’re absolutely devoted to each other and can often be found curled up in their pod together having a snooze.

“Sadly we’ve had no interest from potential adopters and they are now nearing six months with us. We know taking on a pair of cats is an extra big ask but they are wonderful, easy-going characters who’ll bring a lot of fun and friendship to their new owners and we’d encourage people to visit our website or help us to spread the word about them by sharing their story with family and friends.”

Billy and Dave are one of four bonded pairs of cats currently looking for a home at Great Ayton. The RSPCA has said that nationally, the charity’s rehoming centres are “full to bursting with cats”, with hundreds more living in private boarding facilities while they wait for a space to become available.

A spokesperson added: “We’ve seen heart-breaking cases of people who simply cannot afford to feed both themselves and the pets and have been helping families facing eviction who can’t find alternative accommodation that allows them to take their animals. Some of the saddest examples are people who dearly love their pets and are trying their best in very difficult circumstances.”
