Anthony Gordon‘s discomfort at the hands of a Newcastle physio caused a stir among fans watching the Magpies Premier League clash at Chelsea

Eddie Howe‘s side suffered a 3-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge as goals from Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer and Mykhailo Mudryk saw the Blues move to within a point of Newcastle with a game in hand.

The away side’s effort were not aided by the injury to Gordon in the first half, which came after Jackson’s sixth-minute opener.

The England Under 21 international sank to the ground holding his left knee, signaling for the Newcastle medical staff to attend to him.

However, it seemed the initial discovery method on offer was a little too drastic for the winger.

Gordon was instructed to lean back from his seated position on the turf as the physio inspected the damage by bending affected leg.

But as the gap between his heel and thigh narrowed, Gordon violently jerked up, making the physio aware of the pain, shaking his head and appearing to say, ‘don’t do that.’

Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, it was the end of his evening. Howe admitted that he fears the injury could be serious one. It comes ahead of their FA Cup clash against Manchester City at the Etihad this weekend.

‘I can’t really add too much to it other than the fact it was a knee injury.’ The Newcastle boss said post-match. ‘It was strange. There was no mechanism or moment when he felt it, it was just there in the game, according to Anthony at half-time and he was in quite a bit of pain.

‘We don’t quite know how bad that is. We fear it’s not looking too good, he’s in a lot of pain, but it’s early days.

‘I think it was quite early in the game but there there was no moment where he felt the injury, just a pain was there. We sent someone (a staff member) over (to the far side of the pitch) because he didn’t look like he was moving right. Eventually he succumbed to the injury.’

Alexander Isak scored the equaliser before the break to lift Newcastle spirits before the Blues’ goals after the break put them out of sight.

Jacob Murphy scored a 90th minute consolation for the side with just one win in their last four league games.
