Callum Wilson has reflected on his clash with Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario earlier this month..

Tempers flared in North London after Ange Postecoglou‘s side secured a comfortable victory over the Magpies courtesy of goals from Son Heung-min, Destiny Udogie and a Richarlison brace.

Wilson and Vicario engaged in a heated exchange of words during the closing stages of the game after the goalkeeper had appeared to antagonise the England international.

Following the game Wilson accused the Italian, who joined Spurs from Empoli this summer as having a ‘lack of respect’.

Speaking about the incident on his BBC Sounds podcast with Michail Antonio, Wilson insisted his comments came during the heat of the moment.

‘Listen, let’s just get it out of the way. Basically do you know what it’s like you’re in the game you’re in the heat of the moment and this and that.’ He said.

‘Then yeah you do your job, you know like stopping the goalkeeper playing out quick. So I did that and obviously he was trash talking as you do at the end of the game.

Obviously at 4-1 the game’s done, 90-something minute I have a header and he starts pulling faces so so I just said, “what are you doing that for? You are 4-1 up, relax.” And then he was like “rah rah rah” and I said “listen show some respect. You’ve won the game. Chill.”

‘Then he started talking rubbish and I switched and I was like “nah, I’m not having this”. I needed something to just switch me because I was already angry anyway and he just set me off.

‘You put me in front of a camera for the whole nation afterwards and start asking me questions about it. Like I said in the interview after I got annoyed, it was a lack of respect and I said my peace, but then it was done.’

Despite Wilson making no attempt to hide his feelings on the situation, his podcast co-host West Ham striker Michail Antonio couldn’t help but tease him regarding the incident.

‘I’m not gonna lie, [my] team got slapped up. I have to accept that.’ Antonio said.

‘But at least man’s not crying in the papers going: “Oh no, man is so rude you know. It’s a rude person. I can’t take it!”[laughs]’
