Jon Rahm hit out at organizers of The Masters for their refusal to suspend play as 40mph winds caused chaos during Friday’s second round.

The defending champion snuck into the weekend – finishing one shot below the cut line – after a four-over-par 76 on Friday.

Rahm now sits 11 shots off the leaders – Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and Max Homa – after a brutal second day that saw Augusta battered by the elements.

‘It’s about as hard a golf course as I’ve seen in a very long time,’ Rahm said.

A couple of times I was questioning myself why we were out there. Especially when I got to 18 and saw the whole front of the green just full of sand. It’s rolling a little bit different.

‘I understand they want us to finish. I can imagine they were very close to calling it a few times, especially when we were on the 11th green and we were getting those massive gusts every couple of minutes or so. It was extremely difficult.’

No one in the field shot lower than Ludvig Aberg’s three-under-par 69 on Friday, with only eight players shooting below par.

Rahm’s hopes of retaining the green jacket are now all-but over and the Spaniard was frustrated with the speed of play in such tough conditions.

‘You just put the ball down, and it’s very close to moving,’ he said. ‘Not only that, how long did it take us to play?

‘Over six hours to play just because they had to blow the greens in between groups, and then when you get to a group, people stepping back and back in. It’s just, again, borderline. It was very, very close.’
