Tributes have been flooding in for an elderly couple who died in a devastating car crash in Barnsley.

South Yorkshire Police named Peter and Margaret Deeley as the couple who died at the Barugh Green crossroad junction at 2pm, on Saturday March 23. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, Peter, 75 and Margaret, 85, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

A 65-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and was released on police bail. Their family has asked that their privacy be respected while they grieve the loss of their loved ones.

After the force shared the news on Facebook, comments from grief stricken ‘heartbroken’ locals came in flooding into the post.

Laura Robinson said: “My mum was in the second car back at the lights and saw the accident just after it’d happened. Very scary to think that had she been a few minutes earlier it could have been her! Thoughts are with the families of those involved.”

Sally Taylor said: “Devastating for the family. Two lives taken totally unnecessary.” Val Mills said “RIP – an absolutely tragic and horrific accident. It should never have happened.”

Kelly Carberry said: “So sad, this was totally avoidable ! Bad enough losing one parent but both in these circumstances is heartbreaking rip together forever.” Beverley Hey said: “Absolutely heartbreaking my thoughts are with the family. I laid some flowers to pay my respects, we are still in shock.”

Andy Sansom said: “Heartbreaking!! RIP. Thoughts with family and close friends!!” Adrian Hartill said: “A very sad day indeed, rest in peace, my thoughts are with the family, and friends from a local resident.”

Sharon Noble Smith said: “Deepest condolences to Peter and Margaret’s family members and friends such a terrible tragedy.”

Helen Freeman said: “Heartbreaking. Thinking of all their family and friends at this devastating time.” Dianne Bond said: “My deepest condolences thoughts and prayers are with Peter and Margarets family at this sad time rest in peace Peter and Margaret.”

Ruth Fowler said: “Totally devastating, their poor family, what a beautiful couple.”
