It has taken a huge effort from City to ge back into this and they now just look a little tired as they slow the game down.

Vinicius Jr’s race is run as he is replaced by Vazquez.

That’s more than half a chance for someone of Foden’s ability.

Silva fizzes a pass into him that’s bouncing slightly and Foden looks to hit hit first time but the ball cannons off his standing leg and through to Lunin.

Just a slight lull in the last couple of minutes which Madrid will be very happy with.

The crowd are just waiting for City to up the tempo again.

The pattern of the game has not changed a bit.

City still dominating possession, Madrid sitting back and soaking up pressure.

A concerning start to extra time as Bellingham runs to close down Ederson and goes straight into Dias.

Don’t think it was deliberate but it was a hefty collision. Bellingham is not happy at all as he receives treatment, but he finally gets back to his feet.

We are back underway and there has been a big change for City. Haaland is off and on comes Alvarez.

Mendy can consider himself unlucky as he dives in and wins the ball against Walker but the referee doesn’t like the follow through and books him.

It’s a scruffy effort, though, and dribbles through to Lunin.

The first time in a long time that Madrid play the ball out calmly and they threaten to break away.

Didn’t quite happen for Grealish despite the winger getting into some promising positions.

City finally move the ball quickly and Grealish has a bit of room in the box.

He fires an effort towards goal but Lunin sticks out a big left hand and then gathers the loose ball.

It’s attack v defence right now, but Madrid are still not budging.

De Bruyne is giving everything and wins a duel with Bellingham, but City still can’t find the final pass.

Foden has moved central with Silva now out to the right.

Will that make the difference? De Bruyne tries a cross but only finds the side-netting. Is is time for Pep to make a change?

City just need to chill a bit. This feels like it’s the last 10 minutes at the moment but there’s half an hour left. No need to keep it this frantic…

Another booking, this time for Gvardiol as he catches bellingham by the touchline.

City need to keep their cool here, they are still very much on top but need a goal badly.

Carvajal was booked for fouling Grealish in the first half and now it’s the roles reversed.

Probably a smart booking to pick up from Grealish as Carvajal was threatening to burst into the final third.

City continue to probe before Walker finally puts a cross in.

It’s headed clear and drops for Akanji who has a shot on the half-volley that ends up in Row Z.

There is the Etihad roar as Walker sees of Vinicius Jr by using his strength.

The home crowd are urging on their side, but Madrid holding firm for now.

What a horrible goal to concede that would have been!

A mix-up between Lunin and Nacho, and the Real Madrid captain is all of a sudden in danger of scoring an own goal. But he keeps his cool and just clears away under pressure from Haaland.

From the resulting corner, Lunin punches away unconvincingly and Foden fires back in, but Lunin gets back to gather the shot.

Just signs that Madrid are feeling the pressure a little bit as Camavinga puts the ball out of play with no one around him.

Grealish seeing plenty of the ball, but City just missing that final pass right now. Silva puts in another cross, but straight into the gloves of Lunin. Cue groans around the ground.

City straight back on the front foot, and they win an early corner.

The ball is headed out to the edge of the box and Grealish catches it on the volley well, but Lunin parries the ball away to safety.

No changes for now from either side.

He’s a special player, and this was a special touch from Bellingham just moments before Real Madrid took the lead.

Before the game got underway, City fans booed the Champions League anthem, as has become customary due to the club feeling hard done by when it comes to dealing with UEFA in the past.

They will not be around to boo the anthem in the semi-finals unless they score at least once in the second half.

What will the City boss be thinking right now?

His side are just 45 minutes away from going out of the Champions League. Will he consider any changes at the break?

Grealish bursts away from Carvajal and the right back feels he has no option but to drag him down.

It’s a clear yellow card, and he will now be suspended for the first leg of the semi-final if Real Madrid make it.

City just starting to build a bit of momentum after their shaky start.

Now it’s Grealish who finds himself in space and het hits a shot from the edge of the box that is deflected into the side-netting.

Just over half an hour in and you can’t imagine many teams come here and are as comfortable in possession as Real Madrid are.

Eduardo Camavinga, an absolute joy to watch.

Better from City.

First, Grealish gets into the box and tries a toe-poke that is deflected wide.

De Bruyne then gets a bit of space and has a go from the edge of the box but it goes well over the bar.

Madrid look dangerous every time they burst forward, and they briefly have a 3 v 2 here.

Valvered gets into the box and probably should put in a better ball, but his cross is cleared away by Gvardiol. Nervy times these for City.

You do not want to give De Bruyne this much space.

He drives through the midfield and unleashes a shot from the edge of the box, but Lunin gets across to parry behind.

City work the corner to the back post and Haaland heads across goal but Lunin is there to gather once more.

Real Madrid are countering very well and they create another half-chance here.

Vinicius bursts through and lays it off to Carvajal, but his shot is blocked and then Valverde fires a speculative effort over.

There is an anxious energy around the Etihad right now.

Midway through the first half and it’s so far so good for Real Madrid.

City still trying to get something going, but that Haaland chance will have given them some encouragement.

How are City not level?!

Once again it’s down the right hand side of the box, and De Bruyne crosses towards Haaland for a tap-in, but Lunin parries the ball away.

The ball comes back in and Haaland nods against the bar, before the ball bounces off Silva and wide. So close to an equaliser.

City have responded well to the goal and force a couple of corners, but Madrid defend them well.

City then work the ball well down the left and Haaland gets on the end of Silva’s cross but can’t keep his header down.

Bellingham brings the ball down and feeds Valverde who plays it on to Vinicius.

His cross finds Rodrygo who first effort is brilliantly saved by Ederson, but he’s on hand to tap home the rebound.

Camavinga scored last week and he tries his luck from outside the box again here.

But Ederson gets down well and it’s a routine save. Madrid will be happy with how this game has started, though.

Finally, City up the tempo and De Bruyne has space down the right flank.

There isn’t much to pick out in the box, though, and Lunin gets down well to claim the cross.
