Steven Caulker has spilled the beans on a heated conversation he had with Daniel Levy while at Tottenham – and the haunting prediction the Spurs chairman conjured.

The defender had a promising career at Spurs, training with the club’s reserves from the age of 15 and eventually becoming an established first-team squad member after multiple impressive loan moves.

He started and scored on his England debut but found himself wanting more first-team football with Jan Vertonghen and Michael Dawson ahead of him in the pecking order.

After making 28 appearances in the 2012/13 season, he took the decision to move to Cardiff City following his chat with Levy.

Caulker told the Eventful Lives podcast: ‘I’m sat there with Daniel Levy and and he says: “Your behaviour this week has been an absolute disgrace. The owner wants to tear your contract up, understandably so.”

‘I was steaming for the whole time, disgrace, black out, all of that.

‘He said to me: “Look, we could offer you a new deal. You were two games away from getting another year extension.

‘”I’m going to give you that year extension, I’m going to increase your money, this would be a deal.”

‘I was like: ‘”No, I don’t want it. I want to go and play. This manager doesn’t respect me.” And I was forcing for a move.

‘”He said to me, and I’ll never forget his words because there has never been a truer word said: “If you leave here, I promise you you’re only going to go lower.”‘

Little did Caulker know that he would go on to play for ten more clubs in his career and be done with the Premier League completely by 2016.

His move to Cardiff was ill-fated, with the club getting relegated in the 2013/14 season after making him their record signing, but he earned a move to QPR having played every single minute for the Welsh outfit.

The 2014/15 campaign with QPR was his last as a Premier League regular, though subsequent short-term loans with Southampton and Liverpool followed.

Caulker’s story is a tragic one, as he spiralled into depression and came close to ending his own life.

Wages were blown in casinos and and drinking copious amounts of alcohol became a coping mechanism against his worsening mental state.

Stints with various clubs in Scotland, Turkey, and the Championship marked the back end of his career and he is currently without a club after leaving Wigan in March after they failed to pay the players on time on four occasions.

As his grandfather is from Sierra Leone, he has been able to play for them on numerous occasions and has even captained them.
