A mum who admitted to ‘loving her baby’s name’ has had a sudden realisation that the chosen nickname might sound like she’s referring to a chain smoker. It’s genuinely advised to review favourite baby names meticulously before finalising.

Picking a name for your little bundle of joy involves more than just selecting a moniker, as the potential nicknames it may generate and how they sound with your surname needs considering too. One regretful mum overlooked these checks and is now rethinking her decision of naming her daughter Sigrid, as a nickname she wishes to use, could suggest a fondness for smoking cigarettes, reports the Mirror.

On Reddit, she shared that she gave birth to her daughter one week ago, detailing how she agreed on the name Sigrid with her husband after struggling to find common ground on a choice both parties liked. However, wanting to address her little girl as “Siggy” has led her to realise its similarity to the colloquial term for a cigarette.

She penned: “My baby girl is one week old and her name is Sigrid. My husband and I struggled to choose a name. We both had a favourite the other didn’t like – mine was Ottilie and his Aubrey. Etta was our compromise name, but he soon went off it after birth. He mentioned Sigrid and I thought I liked it and agreed.”

The mum expressed her concerns, saying: “Now I’m worried she will get bullied for it sounding like cigarette. My husband loves the nickname Ziggy or Siggy. Could Sisi work (pronounced Ceecee? ) Also, we’re not Scandinavian, although we both look it and my husband has Danish heritage a couple of generations back.”

She’s since grown fond of the name Beatrix, revealing that her husband “may be willing” to change their daughter’s name to sidestep potential teasing in the future. Yet, commenters on her post were quick to comfort her, affirming that Sigrid is a beautiful name.

One commenter reassured her: “Sigrid doesn’t sound like cigarette unless you’ve driven yourself mad worrying about it. Calm down and get on with your life,” while another chimed in: “I think it’s a really cool name. I would not worry about her getting teased. I didn’t even remotely make that connection or any other bad ones. I don’t think children will.”

Another offered solace, writing: “You’re only a week into postpartum. It’s natural to be a bit panicked in general. Give yourself time to settle in before you think about changing something as big as her name. See if it starts to settle in and feel more familiar.”
