Trey Lance‘s time with the San Francisco 49ers is over, and the two sides can put their rocky relationship in the rearview mirror as they go their separate ways.

The former third overall pick is doing just that. On Tuesday, Lance spoke to the media for the first time since being traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a 4th round pick.

I really tried to not expect anything one way or another, but I can say that when I heard it was the Cowboys, I had a big smile on my face. I’m very excited to be here. … I believe that everything happens for a reason. I believe I’m here for a reason and… I’m here to try and find a way to help this team.

There were surely plenty of suitors for the former high draft pick, but the Cowboys seemingly made the best offer. It’s interesting that a team with an established starter like Dak Prescott would make that sort of move, but Lance provides insurance in the present and possibly a starter in the future.

Lance isn’t coming in with the idea of any sort of quarterback competition. Instead, he wants to learn from Prescott.

He welcomed me with open arms. It meant a lot to me. This business is crazy but… I’m just trying to take it one day at a time. This guy has played at a very high level for a long time so, obviously, just tons of respect for him, as I think he deserves and gets from across the league. I’m just trying to learn everything I possibly can from him.

San Fran is in the rearview mirror

Lance was unable to blossom in San Francisco, with a major ankle injury early into the 2022 season stalling his development and essentially putting an end to his time with the Niners.

The former North Dakota State product will sit behind Prescott until his number is called. Another subpar season from Prescott could see Lance on the field sooner than expected.
