The Traitors contestants were left in total shock when Paul returned to the castle on Thursday’s episode.

Many had expected him to be murdered for being ‘popular’ and had anticipated that Meg would return to the competition instead.

It was between Meg and Paul who wold be murdered next after they ended up in the dungeon on Wednesday night’s episode – after which Andrew was saved and Ash was banished.

Suspicions have been rising that Paul is a Traitor, with Jaz in particular pointing out some of the flaws in his act.

After he returned at breakfast Jaz said to some of the others: ‘I don’t know how he has done it! He has convinced everyone he is faithful!’

Elsewhere Ross screamed when he walked back in: ‘Your face is not the face we thought we would see coming back.’

Evie and Zach were also suspicious of him.

It came as Paul was branded the new ‘Nasty Nick’ of reality TV as he found himself in the firing line on the episode.

Viewer took to X, formerly Twitter, hailing him the ultimate villain as they saw him ‘turn on the crocodile tears’ as he realised his plan to double bluff the Faithfuls could backfire.

After Ash’s banishment, Meg or Paul was at risk of being murdered by the Traitors after they were the remaining contestants who had been condemned in the dungeons.

The 36-year-old was applauded by fans who said he ‘deserved an Oscar’ as he burst into tears and had to be comforted by Jonny over claims he was missing his family.

But Paul confessed the real reason behind his tears was because his plan to double bluff the Faithfuls by placing himself in the dungeon had backfired.

He said: ‘I’ve had a very emotional day over the family and stuff but to be honest that was genuine emotion just reshaped in a different way that I knew I would benefit from it’.

Contestants were stunned when Paul returned to the breakfast table, instead of Faithful Meg, who they believed was a Traitor.

Viewers wrote: ‘I’m very conflicted. I’d love Paul to go, but he also makes for quality telly. He’s the new nasty Nick.’

‘My emotions were genuine, they were just reshaped in a different way” I think that’s called being manipulative Paul’.

‘Please give me Paul’s downfall now’ and ‘Paul with the fake tears. Someone give that man an Oscar.’

Paul said: ‘Being a Traitor is testing. It’s really tough. It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve done actually. They might not like the way I go about things but I hope people see this is literally the levels you have to go to.’

Viewers believe Paul could replace Big Brother ‘Nasty Nick’ Bateman, who became known for playing his fellow housemates off of one another.

Paul said of Ash’s elimination. He said: ‘The dungeon, Ash was terrible down there.

‘The team is only strong as its weakest link. If you are not performing on a football pitch or work, you go and she needed to go.

‘I want us to hide now.’

Harry warned Paul: ‘It could bring heat to you.’

Jonny was the next to be eliminated on the episode but he was in fact a Faithful.

The Traitors continues on BBC One on Friday at 9pm.
