Everton have looked very good going forward.

Ben Godfrey is involved again, but this time in an attacking sense. He gets his head to a Dwight McNeil free-kick, but can’t turn it home.

It was a free header, after watching the replay I think he should do much better.

Positive signs though.

Offside call the correct one on the penalty incident but Everton will be encouraged by how unsettled Liverpool look across the back. It will suit the home team for the game to be 100 miles an hour for a while…but that cant go on forever.

Wow, what a clearance by Ben Godfrey!

Liverpool looked certain to score, but Godfrey saves the day. Trent Alexander-Arnold lofts a lovely ball into Mo Salah at the back post, who then pulls the ball across the area.

You just expect the net to ripple, but Godfrey is there to get rid of the ball as Luis Diaz is set to pounce.

Brilliant football all round.

There you go, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was indeed ahead of the Liverpool defenders.

That means Alisson’s yellow card is rescinded, he is one lucky man because that was poor.

Everton fans boo, I’m not sure why…

Everton have an early penalty!

Alisson hesitates as he comes out to try and smother Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but he takes him out as the ball goes past him.

However, VAR is checking for offside… he does look slightly off.

Everton nearly deal the first blow of the night.

Dwight McNeil pulls the ball back for Abdoulaye Doucoure, but his first-time effort goes miles wide.

Liverpool then come close through Luis Diaz, but Everton hook clear.

A more than decent start to the match.

Goodison Park is a cauldron of noise.

The boos come out from the Everton crowd as soon as Liverpool get their first touch on the ball.

This could be a really tough evening for the Reds, the crowd can really help the Toffees out.

The ball is rolling in both Merseyside and south London.

It’s a huge night of thrilling Premier League action, all the teams involved want the three points, but the derby at Goodison Park feels like Everton want them more than they ever have.

Strap in all, it’s going to be a rollercoaster of a night.

Wow, Goodison Park is rocking, the Toffees are well up for this.

The Everton fans roar as the two teams come out from the tiny tunnel, it really is tight in there.

Now it’s time for the Premier League anthem to ruin the incredible noise within the stadium.

Bournemouth have come out of the traps flying, they mean business.

The Cherries have had the first chance of the match through Antoine Semenyo, who forces Jose Sa into a strong save. They then rattle the woodwork from a corner.

Nervous moments for the hosts.

In our feature game tonight, both Everton and Liverpool have completed their warm-ups.

This is when the nerves really start to jangle as a fan, the anticipation is at an all-time high.

The atmosphere is rumbling and Goodison Park is nearly ready.

The 7.45pm match is underway at Molineux.

Both sides have been struggling to get wins of late, but can either of them change that tonight?

You need to listen, you need to get a feeling for it [the derby]. In the beginning, I knew it is now I feel it that is the big difference. I’m pretty sure after a year I was fully in but I can tell you over the years you learn everything about this fixture.

Had only three clubs I worked for but some I will likely never work again as a manager. There are a couple of clubs I will never definitely work for.

I have been to this stadium many times over the years and watched Everton struggle against the very best teams. I have occasionally seen them do very well but more often than not they will flatter to deceive.

Looking at the two teams tonight, Sean Dyche’s players will have to play above themselves here if they are to buck that trend. For his part, Jurgen Klopp will hope to see something better from Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez, both restored to the lineup after being rested at Fulham.

It’s fair to say, Mo Salah loves the Merseyside Derby.

The ‘Egyptian King’ returns to the starting 11 tonight after being given a rest away at Fulham. H will want to return with a goal.

Salah has netted five times in his last five league appearances against Everton.

He could become the first player since Dixie Dean in 1932-33 to score two or more goals in both Merseyside derbies in a single league campaign.

Scoring a brace away at Everton is tough, but he has done it before, in December 2021.

Both teams have gone with their strongest XIs in the circumstances and this should be an enthralling game. I think the key will be a fast start for Liverpool. If Everton frustrate the visitors as they will intend to do, they will grow in confidence and could make this a very scrappy affair. Liverpool’s biggest problem in the last month has mirrored a season-long issue for the Toffees – wastefulness. The Reds need to be more clinical while when chances do fall Everton’s way, they must take them.

Everton have found form at the right time.

Either side of a heavy 6-0 defeat away to Chelsea, the Toffees have beaten relegation rivals Burnley and Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park.

Sean Dyche’s side is aiming to win three consecutive home league matches without conceding for the first time since a run of five in 2019.

It could be a tough ask tonight.

It’s been important to generate that good feeling around Goodison and create an atmosphere that is difficult for any team to come and play here. We were able to do it at the weekend and we are hoping to do it tonight, what an opportunity it is to do it with the derby here. Everyone is excited to get the game started.

I’m on a bit of a roll tonight, so let’s bring you some more statistics.

This one is a real niche one, something I never expected to write a post about, but stats like these are just fantastic.

Crystal Palace haven’t claimed three points in any of their last 15 league fixtures that have been played on a Wednesday. I know, mad!

So, that’s a good omen for Newcastle fans, or will that stat be broken tonight?

Everton’s Merseyside Derby record has not been the best in recent years.

The Toffees are without a win in their last 12 Premier League home games against Liverpool, however, they have only lost three of those.

That’s not the end of the damning statistics though, Everton have only won one of their last 26 league meetings with Liverpool, home and away. The solitary win came at Anfield in February 2021 as they came out 2-0 victors.

Not good reading for the Blues, but stats are there to be broken and when a team is fighting for their lives, anything is possible.

Can they finally bag those elusive home three points against their bitter rivals?

You might be wondering where Cody Gakpo is, well, Lewis Steele has the answer.

The Dutch forward who has been in decent form of late, misses tonight due to his wife expecting to give birth.

I think that’s a fair excuse to miss a match.

I’m not surprised at this, though.

Newcastle name an unchanged side from the one that humbled Tottenham 4-0 – it feels like a lifetime ago.

Can we expect more goals from the team?

Well then, Michael Olise does not start!

Jordan Ayew comes in to replace him as the only change to the side that beat West Ham 5-2.

That was certainly not a change I was expecting.

Jurgen Klopp has rung the changes once again, making six to the side that came out 3-1 winners away at Fulham.

The whole midfield has changed as Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Curtis Jones all come in.

Luis Diaz keeps his place, but Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah return to the frontline.

Ibrahima comes back into the centre of defence to partner Virgil van Dijk.

Sean Dyche makes two changes from the win over Nottingham Forest.

Ben Godfrey and James Garner come into the side for Ashley Young and Andre Gomes.

After coming off with an injury against Forest, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is fit to start.

Firstly, I apologise for the sub-heading… not! I love a bit of wordplay, I couldn’t resist.

Wolves have a very good record against Bournemouth in recent times, they have lost only one of their seven Premier League meetings with the Cherries, winning four.

The solitary loss? A 1-0 defeat to Gary O’Neil’s Bournemouth in February 2023, at Molineux.

Oh, I love statistics like these, don’t you?

The Cherries also make some changes, three to be precise.

One of them is surprising as Mark Travers comes in between the posts, as Neto drops to the bench.

Antoine Semenyo and Alex Scott also come into the starting 11.

Gary O’Neil makes four changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Arsenal at Molineux on Saturday.

Nelson Semedo, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Mario Lemina, and Pablo Sarabia all come into the team to freshen things up.

Can this Wolves team get back to winning ways?

Derbies across the country, I’ve played in them, I’ve managed in them, this one I have managed only two, both away, so obviously I’ve not experienced the home yet, of course it means more but the point is you are hoping to get to a consistent level of performance where every game you are taking it on is. But [in a derby] of course the noise changes, the players you know what they get, the feel of the game does change.

We’ve just come off an important result, we’re back at Goodison and the fans are in good voice, it’s a great opportunity again to take it on. That’s all I’m looking for, a performance that can take on the game and win. It’s not easy but you’ve got to have the mindset to go: “Right, let’s just take the performance on and forget about all the stories of the past and take this performance on.”

While Jurgen Klopp doesn’t have to endure the pressure of a Merseyside Derby much longer, a certain Arne Slot might.

It seems after some twists and turns in the task to find Jurgen Klopp’s replacement, Liverpool have identified the man they want.

The Reds have opened talks with Feyenoord boss, Arne Slot, as they look to secure the services of the Dutch manager.

The fans certainly seem excited about the prospect of Slot’s potential arrival on Merseyside, so I have a feeling you may want to cast your eyes on this article.

Around the derby is just pressure. The pressure is higher so why should the joy be higher? You win it, great, but why should I miss the pressure around it? This time, when you’re really playing for something, that’s the pressure. But when you are both not in a great moment, it’s the one game you have to win, definitely. That kind of pressure – why would I miss that? It’s not enjoyable.

Liverpool fans, do you have a handkerchief handy? You may get emotional tonight.

Today marks the 19th and final time Jurgen Klopp will lead his Reds out for a Merseyside Derby, but he will not be thinking about that. Three points is all he wants from tonight.

Klopp may not enjoy the derby (you’ll see in the next post), but he has been rather successful in them. Tonight, he can become the first Liverpool manager in history to reach 10 league wins against Everton.

However, the meetings he has had to endure at Goodison Park have not always been the best. Klopp has only won two out of seven matches at Goodison, with the other five ending in draws.

One point wouldn’t be good enough tonight though, if he wants a Premier League title fairytale ending at the Reds.

No room for emotion tonight from Klopp’s perspective, they have a job to do.

I think we can all admit, this Premier League campaign has been simply sensational.

I think it is reflected in some of the games we have had. Just to name a few, Chelsea 4-4 Man City, Man City 3-3 Tottenham, Liverpool 4-3 Fulham, and Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea.

The goalscoring has been relentless this season, like nothing we have ever seen before in the division.

So it comes as no surprise that only four goals need to fly in this evening for the Premier League record for most goals in a season to be broken.

There are not just three Premier League matches tonight, there is a fourth too.

Manchester United are looking for some way to get the critics off their back, which will be hard after Sunday’s shambles against Coventry.

They face a doomed rock-bottom Sheffield United tonight, so they should win, right? That’s not how United roll though.

I have a sneaky feeling this could be a sensational game.

Crystal Palace have suddenly burst into life under Oliver Glasner, first ending Liverpool’s 18-month Anfield unbeaten run before sending five goals past West Ham at the weekend.

It’s clear that Palace fans are loving life under their Austrian manager, their new and exciting brand of football is a pleasure to watch. Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise are thriving in the system.

Having said that, Newcastle are in very good form. The Magpies have secured 10 points from their last four matches, with the most recent of those a 4-0 humbling of Tottenham.

Eddie Howe’s side come to Selhurst Park as a side riddled with injury problems, but with the form they are in, they’ll certainly be capable of hurting Palace’s sudden re-birth.

I’m predicting lots of goals.

Gary O’Neil is going to see some familiar faces at Molineux tonight.

Tonight will feel like a big match for the Wolves boss, who you would expect will want to get one over Bournemouth, who he managed for 10 months, and kept in the Premier League, last season.

However, wins have been hard to come by for Wolves of late, they are winless in their last five games, losing three of them.

It’s not like the visitors this evening are in the best form either, Bournemouth haven’t picked up three points in any of their last three matches.

Surely one of these records has to end tonight, right? I bet it will be a draw now I said that.

Nerves, optimism, anguish, and euphoria. Just some of the emotions fans feel on derby day.

The City of Liverpool is home to two of the biggest clubs in English football, everybody knows the Merseyside Derby. It was once seen as the ‘Friendly derby’, but it doesn’t feel like that anymore.

Friends of mine on both sides of the divide can go from laughing together one day to not talking the next. Why? That’s how much the derby means to them.

Liverpool have had the better of it over the last couple of decades, but you can never count Everton out. Form doesn’t come into it when these two meet, they are both desperate for three points.

So much is at stake for both teams. Liverpool are still in the three-horse race for the Premier League title, anything less than a win could spell the end of their title-winning dreams. Everton would happily oblige in crushing them.

Meanwhile, Everton are still in the midst of the relegation battle. Lose, and those doubts will start to creep back in despite their win over Nottingham Forest.

Both teams have so much to lose, it’s going to be a belter (we hope ).

After writing that introduction I’m now amped up for another brilliant night of top-tier football, so hopefully you all are too.

It’s also an evening where the race for the European spots could be affected with Newcastle in action against Crystal Palace, while Gary O’Neil has a mini derby of his own as his Wolves side face his former employers, Bournemouth.

I’m sure you can already tell there are a lot of storylines for you to follow tonight. These are the types of nights I adore, there is so much at stake for so many teams.

I bet there are some very nervous Liverpool and Everton fans reading this, the derby means so much more than three points.
