Carlton have suffered a huge blow, subbing out key defender Jacob Weitering at half-time.

As the third quarter kicks off, news has filtered through that Weitering can’t see out the match.

The defender copped a knock at the end of the first term, and had his right thigh heavily strapped by the trainers. The commentators called it a corky.

Weitering returned to the field for the second quarter but looked to have limited mobility.

At half-time, the Carlton medics made the call to pull him out of the game. Jack Carroll was subbed on.

It will stretch the Blues defence, having to cover big forwards Logan McDonald and Joel Amartey.

On top of that, Weitering has been in All-Australian form since the start of the year.

The Blues have had a horrific run with injuries, losing Jack Martin (calf), Adam Cerra (hamstring) and Matthew Cotterell (navicular bone) from last week’s win against Melbourne.

The Swans have subbed out Robbie Fox after he injured his shoulder. The Swans are saying it is an AC joint and not a dislocated shoulder.

The unfortunate injury happened late in the third term.

Sydney activated sub Braeden Campbell.

3QT: It is a small consolation, but Matthew Kennedy has kicked a goal for the Blues just before three-quarter time.

The Swans absolutely dominated the third term, kicking 7.4 to the Blues 2.3

Not only were Isaac Heeney and Chad Warner able to control the midfield but they both pushed forward to kick two goals apiece for the term. Warner has three for the match.

The Blues are not in the same class, and this looming loss will see them slip from the eight.

Sydney, however, are showing why they deserve to be top of the table.

It is ending up an ugly night for Carlton at the SCG.

The Swans have stretched their lead to 52 points with two minutes remaining in the third term.

Sydney have piled on seven three-quarter goals – two to Isaac Heeney, two to Chad Warner and singles to Sam Wicks, Harry Cunningham and Hayden McLean. They are dynamic out of the centre square, leading that stat 7-0, and are dominating Carlton’s midfield.

The Blues threw Charlie Curnow behind the ball to try and stop the rot, and Harry McKay is looking for kicks up at the half-back line.

How can they kick a winning score with that set-up?

The Swans have extended their lead to 34 points in the third term.

Carlton kicked the opening goal of the term through Charlie Curnow, closing the lead to nine points and giving the Blues fans hope.

But the Swans answered back almost immediately with two goals to Isaac Heeney, one to Chad Warner and another to Sam Wicks.

It is raining goals, and the Swans are looking every bit the top side in the competition.

HT: After they were caught napping in the opening 20 minutes of the game, the Swans are now on top.

They have kicked six of the past seven goals of the match to lead by 14 points at half-time. That after the Blues booted the first four goals of the game.

Sydney are the kings of efficiency. They trail match disposals 182-167, they trail kicks 114-106, they trail handballs 68-60, and they trail marks 42-31. But they are well ahead for inside 50s – 27 to 23. So, basically, they are using the ball far better than the Blues. They are going direct.

They have multiple goalkickers in Joel Amartey and Tom Papley, both with two, and their backs have been able to handle the big Blues forwards.

Such was their dominance in the second quarter, the Blues threw Charlie Curnow behind the ball in the final three minutes to stem the flow.

The leading possession winners are: Nic Newman with 22, Patrick Cripps 15, Chad Warner 17, Blake Acres 15 and Isaac Heeney 13.

The Lizard has gone on a breathtaking dash. Nick Blakey grabbed the ball and burst off half-back, taking a number of bounces before dishing off a handball.

While the ball ended up out of bounds, his dash and dare seemed to rattle the Blues. During their next forway forward, small Carlton defender Jordan Boyd got caught one-on-one with Joel Amartey and in his panic, Boyd grabbed the big Swan and gave a free kick at least 50m off the ball.

Amartey was able to goal and stretch their lead to nine points.

Soon after, Chad Warner snapped another Swans goal. The Blues are now trailing by 15 points.

The advantage rule has worked in the Swans favour.

Joel Amartey was infringed in a marking contest about 25m from goal and the umpire called a free-kick.

As the Blues players stopped, Tom Papley picked up the ball and booted it through the goals. Smart move, Papps.

His direct opponent, Alex Cincotta, will be spewing. He has worn Papley like a glove, but the quick-thinking forward has now booted two.

Soon after Amartey took a strong grab and kicked truly. The Swans have kicked the first two goals of the second quarter, the last four goals of the game and have taken a two point lead.

This match has swung on its head. The Blues are now playing catch up.
