Nick Watson has shown plenty of promise for the Hawks but his goal-kicking has been an issue this season.

He has kicked 5.15 this season and today has missed several shots for goal, yet he still is fighting back against the barbs, waving goodbye to some fans and remonstrating with any Tigers who want to get into him about his missed chances.

Dylan Moore made a lovely pass to find Breust in position to score.

The AFL is considering a significant change to a key part of its competitive balance system in time for this year’s national draft.

In a major surprise on Saturday, the league’s executive general manager of football, Laura Kane, said the current points-bidding system on father-son and next-generation academy players could be altered within months ahead of the November draft.

The AFL had indicated an inclination to tweak the points system in the draft to deliver greater market value for clubs to pay when matching bids. Clubs, however, had privately expected any changes under the league’s ongoing competitive balance review to be introduced next year.

“That’s another pillar of the competitive balance review, we’re looking at probably from a couple of months from now, you’ll have a good understanding of father-sons, NGA [next generation acad]emies] players, northern academies, player movement-wise and then the state league … national reserves conversation is something that we’re working through but we will make sure we get through the player movement outcomes including the father-son in the next couple of months,” Kane told SEN.

Kane insisted clubs “are aware” changes could be made soon if they are ratified by the AFL Commission. Clubs are well advanced on planning for this year’s national draft.

“It might [impact this year’s draft] … the clubs have been on notice, we’ve been talking about this for 12 months,” Kane said.

There is split feedback across clubs on the current points system, with some questioning whether it was fair that father-son guns Nick Daicos and Sam Darcy, for instance, could be taken by their clubs using picks in the late 30s, despite other clubs bidding on them high in the first round.

Kane said clubs had flagged little interest in a mid-season trade period of players, although there was interest in the trading of draft selections.

“We didn’t get much support for that [mid-season trading of players], to be honest. The clubs, I think, there was interest in the trading of picks, but not as much interest in the trading of players, is probably a fair summary of where the clubs were with that,” she said.

“It seems to be the sentiment at the moment, particularly if other things … like the access to academy or father sons, was to change, or become fairer in the clubs’ eyes, there was less appetite for something like a mid-season trading of players.”

In terms of the academy system, there are clubs pushing for change because it’s felt it’s unfair that clubs who develop a star player under this system can only have priority access to the player if no rival bid is made on that player before pick 40.

Club football chiefs will meet with the league on June 25 as part of a major review into competitive balance, covering football operations, football performance and talent pathways.

The Hawks have put a gap on the Tigers in a hurry.

Two goals to Mabior Chol and another to Calsher Dear have blown the margin out to 39 points.

The Richmond-dominated crowd, full of energy after Dustin Martin’s first goal of the game, has gone flat.

The brown and gold contingent, though, are loving it. They can sit back and enjoy the final quarter.

There won’t be a nervous finish in this game.

Richmond are hanging on grimly.

The Hawks are owning territory but can’t land the killer blow yet, but you feel like it’s not far away given how much time the ball is spending in their forward half.

Everything the Tigers are doing is difficult.

They need to find a more cultured way to bring the ball out of their defensive zone than hack and hope kicks that invariably land in brown and gold arms.

Noah Balta is the only Tiger who looks like he can take an intercept mark to launch their attack.

The Hawks’ ground level forward pressure has been stifling.

Dear has kicked his second goal and Breust was again involved paddling the ball from the ground to Dear, who snapped it immediately on his left foot.

The Hawks have kicked four successive goals.

Hawks 76, Tigers 37 with three mins to go in Q3.
