There will be delays for commuters this week while a rail bridge is urgently repaired after a truck crash yesterday.

Yesterday morning, an over-height truck hit a rail bridge at Corinda, causing long delays, and Queensland Rail’s engineering teams have identified significant structural damage to a section of the bridge.

Queensland Rail said a section of the bridge would remain closed until permanent repairs could be completed, and this would affect the Ipswich and Springfield lines.

“While we carry out these repairs, minor delays are anticipated through the area due to the reduced capacity of the bridge,” QR said in a statement on its Facebook page.

“We anticipate these repairs will be completed by next week.”

Queensland government entities have repeatedly been urged to improve their cybersecurity, and now the state’s Audit Office has dedicated a whole report to the issue.

While noting the public sector has invested in such work over recent years, the report found agencies and departments were “not as prepared as they have to be”.

“Just having plans [to respond to and recover from cyber attacks] is not enough. They need to test their plans and readiness,” the report noted, making recommendations to address this.

It found some entities weren’t aware of the services available from the government Cyber Security Unit – which itself didn’t know where its help was needed most.

The report cited data from the Australian Cyber Security Centre, which reported a 23 per cent increase in cyber crime reports nationwide last financial year to 94,000 – 30 per cent of which were in Queensland, “which is disproportionate to its population size”.

We’re only a few days into winter but this morning you could really feel it.

The Bureau of Meteorology says Brisbane got down to 8.2 degrees Celsius this morning – the first time this year temperatures have fallen to single digits.

According to their statistics, it hasn’t been so cold since July last year.

The coldest it got last month was Tuesday morning two weeks ago, when the temperature dipped to 10C.

And if you’ve forgotten your maroon scarf today, you’ll be pleased to know the weather’s already warmed up, and is heading towards a top temperature of 21 degrees.

The Gold Coast’s tram line may stop short if the LNP launches a review of the project, public transport advocates fear.

Rail Back on Track advocacy group is pleading for bipartisan support for stage four of the light rail project which will link Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta via the Gold Coast Airport after the opposition announced it plans to look at alternative transport options.

The LNP has seized on multibillion-dollar cost blowouts ahead of October’s state election, with Deputy Leader Jarrod Bleijie saying he wants to “put the brakes on the project”.

The 13-kilometre extension of the light rail to Coolangatta is forecast to cost between $4.4 billion and $7.6 billion. The upper estimate could exceed the entire $7.1 billion Olympics infrastructure budget.

“We do agree that the cost estimates are high,” Rail Back on Track spokesman Robert Dow said.

“The reality is that planning for stage four is reasonably well advanced, which puts it in a good position to be completed by the 2032 Olympics. To halt now means losing all that progress …

“The last thing SEQ [south-east Queensland] needs is another half-built public transport line.”

The Brisbane Lions have secured one of the most crucial retention coups in recent memory, as star midfielder Hugh McCluggage inked a seven-year extension to remain at the Den.

McCluggage loomed as one of the most sought-after free agents in the AFL, on the back of a period as vice-captain where he has risen to the brink of All-Australian status.

The 26-year-old has averaged more than 25 disposals and nearly four clearances a game this year in what has otherwise been a lacklustre campaign for the Lions, but his retention through the end of 2031 has given some crucial security at Springfield.

“Individually, I just want to be the best teammate I can, and I want to keep improving in all facets of my life,” McCluggage said.

“As a team, I think we need to remain consistent and continue to provide a hardworking but fun environment for everyone who comes through our club to thrive.

“If we do that, I have no doubt that on-field success will follow.”

Police yesterday afternoon released an image of Kai Fursey, 28, whom officers had been searching for since the crash in Wacol last week.

About 2.15am, a Ford Mondeo and the Uber, a Toyota Camry, crashed at the intersection of Boundary Road and Progress Road in Wacol, with police alleging the driver of the Ford fled the scene.

A passenger in the Camry, 30-year-old Ryan Grafton, died at the scene.

Fursey, from Goodna, was taken into custody after he presented to the Acacia Ridge police yesterday evening.

Rangers witnessed another landslip at Inskip Point yesterday afternoon.

Commonly called sinkholes, the near-shore landslips or landslides cannot be predicted and occur when a large body of sand moves quickly underwater.

In a statement, the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation said the sand at Inskip Point is “constantly being replenished,” for example by sand moved along after cliffs have collapsed along the Cooloola coast.

The department has introduced a buffer zone along the coastline where camping and vehicles are off-limits.

Brisbane removalists started throwing furniture from the back of a truck in a bid to force one customer to pay more, an investigation by Queensland’s Office of Fair Trading has revealed.

The Brisbane-based removalist firm Agill Transport and transport and storage company Buraq Transport and Logistics have been ordered to pay $147,000 in fines and compensation following the investigation.

Managing director Ayesha Siddiqa, as well as staff member Muhammad Zulnorain, were taken to court for breaching consumer laws.

In one instance, a customer was coerced into paying for extra truck space they argued was not needed.

“The consumer said staff began throwing their furniture off the truck under instruction from Mr Zulnorain in order to harass and coerce them into signing paperwork stating their belongings took up extra space,” the statement said.

“The consumer reluctantly ended up paying for the extra space.”

In other instances, goods were damaged beyond repair, delivery times exceeded, and an insurance claim withheld from a customer.

It’s another sunny day in Brisbane today – enjoy it while it lasts!
