There is no doubt over what is the most anticipated fight in boxing: Canelo vs Benavidez.

“He’s running out of excuses, he says all I bring is 25 pounds more and I’m not worth anything, but he’s asking for $200 million dollars and now he wants to fight me the same night? That’s stupid, just tell people you don’t want to fight me. To me, it looks like he’s scared,” Benavidez commented while promoting the fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15.

Canelo Alvarez appears to challenge David Benavidez in the ring after Munguia victory

After his convincing performance against Jaime Munguía in Las Vegas, Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez consolidated his position as the undisputed figure of Mexican boxing. At the end of the fight, a gesture went viral where Canelo is seen inviting Benavidez to the ring, supposedly.

The tapatío theoretically invited the Red Flag to get into the ring, although with a mocking laugh and without saying a single word. Benavidez just raised his hands as if asking what to do.

What actually happened?

But now new users are claiming that it wasn’t Benavidez who was targeted. According to @pantherchavez, who notes that while it appeared he was trolling the Mexican Monster, the gestures were directed towards the regional Mexican music singers Peso Pluma and Luis R. Conríquez, that night’s special guests.

Something that also isn’t entirely clear is that if we look at both images, in the video that states he is challenging Benavidez, Canelo no longer has his gloves, while in the one that states that he is inviting Peso Pluma to come up, he still has them.

What is undoubted is that this action of the Jalisco native has sparked rumors on social networks about the fight that everyone wants to see, which could take place on the weekend of Mexico’s Independence Day, this September.

Canelo vs Benavidez

Canelo asked for between $150 and 200 million to accept the fight that could be held in September. An astronomical figure, far from the $100 million that in theory would be on the table to organize the most awaited fight, the one that would determine who is superior.

“For three years I have been the WBC mandatory challenger and he doesn’t want to give me the fight. I’ll knock him out. It’s going to be a tough fight, but I believe 100% in what I can do,” said Benavidez confidently.

Before that, he will have to beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15. After that, he would have to negotiate with Canelo and go back down in weight, after moving up to 175 pounds.

“From 175 to 168 pounds, if he’s going to give me the fight I have to come down, if he doesn’t give me the fight there’s no reason to come down,” reasoned Benavidez. According to some experts, Canelo would prefer the fight in a few months rather than later in 2025.
