The Kansas City Chiefs have been accused of favoritism in their handling of Isaiah Buggs and Rashee Rice after the duo were arrested for separate incidents. Defensive tackle Buggs and wide receiver Rice have both been involved in legal issues away from the field, but the Chiefs are seemingly willing to give the latter a chance to redeem himself.

According to court documents, Buggs was arrested for domestic violence and burglary, with the horrifying details being made public.

Per police reports, Buggs allegedly broke into the apartment of the mother of his child and engaged in caused horrendous injuries to his ex-partner. This incident, coupled with previous allegations of animal cruelty against the 27-year-old, paints a concerning picture of his off-field behavior.

He was released on a $5,000 bond, according to Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office records. However, the Chiefs have remained relatively tight-lipped about Buggs‘ status with the team.

Buggs, who was on the roster of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions earlier in his career, signed a futures contract with the Chiefs in February after being on their practice squad last season.

But it seems he will be handled differently to Rice, who was arrested for his role in a high-speed car crash and allegations of assault at a Dallas nightclub in April.

Is Patrick Mahomes to blame for the different treatment?

Even he has been charged with several felonies, Rice was allowed to attend offseason activities to develop his career – Buggs, however, was not afforded the same treatment.

“I learnt so much from that,” Rice said during a children’s football camp in Kansas City, “All I can do is mature and continue to grow from that. This is a step in a better direction for me.”

Rightly or wrongly, the fact of the matter is that Rice played a key role in their Super Bowl campaign in his rookie season and is relied upon as a WR for Mahomes.

As a practice squad member, Buggs would be easier to discard and, as NFL analyst Mike Fiorio pointed out, the treatment speaks of a double standard.

“Excuses are made for the stars; examples are made of the scrubs,” said Florio.
