Despite boasting one of the top offenses in the NFL in 2023, the Dallas Cowboys were once again a quick out in the playoffs following a disastrous wild-card round defeat to the Green Bay Packers at AT&T Stadium. The pressure is on in Dallas entering the 2024 season, when the franchise will hope to put its lengthy Super Bowl drought behind it at last.

Overcoming other NFC contenders in Detroit, Philadelphia, and San Francisco will not be easy, but Dallas believes it has one of the NFL‘s best-kept secrets: an offensive weapon that is ready for his close-up and could impact the Cowboys like Travis Kelce has impacted the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jake Ferguson is “scratching the surface” of his ability

The 2023 season saw tight end Jake Ferguson take positive steps forward in his development. The 2022 fourth-round draft pick set new career highs with 71 catches, 761 yards, and five touchdowns, meriting his first Pro Bowl selection. In the 48-32 playoff loss to Green Bay, Ferguson hauled in 10 passes for 93 yards and three touchdowns — and in a new interview with ESPN, the former Wisconsin Badger has made it clear that he is just getting started.

“To me, I think I’m not even scratching my surface,” Ferguson said. “There’s so many things that I want to get better at and I know I can get better at.”

Ferguson’s attention-grabbing 2023 season has already elicited comparisons not only to Cowboys icon Jason Witten, but to future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Kelce — who has even name-checked Ferguson as someone he is “excited about” in 2024.

“Jake Ferguson in Dallas and Daniel Bellinger over in New York, I’m excited to see how these guys develop over the next few years and we’ll see where they can take their game,” Kelce has said.

Ferguson was already regarded as a strong blocker before his NFL career took off, but his chemistry with quarterback Dak Prescott has surprised many — and it is perhaps one more reason why Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has felt so comfortable with his roster this offseason, despite fan wariness over Dallas’ lack of splashy moves. Whether Ferguson can take another step forward in 2024 will be decisive in the Cowboys’ pursuit of their first championship in 28 years.
