Conor McGregor’s injury that will prevent him from headlining UFC 303 alongside Michael Chandler was a major setback for all parties.

In the case of UFC CEO Dana White, he had little time to rearrange the event. With ‘The Notorious’ being injured, there was no need for a replacement.

The UFC boss maneuvered to find an alternative fight, which he did in Alex Pereira vs. Jií Procházka, thus filling the fight slot that guaranteed massive PPV buys. In a sporting sense, the event may have even improved.

Chandler, for his part, said that he was warned that the fight may be off just as he was approaching the most intense part of his training.

“I had just finished my last sparring session, Thursday morning, I had been hearing rumors since Monday, obviously, but I actually got the call about an hour after completing my last sparring session,” he said.

According to ‘Iron’, the work was almost finished and, with it, “the risk of injury” on his part. He was done with the “overtraining, the pounding, the bruising, the cuts… I was done with that. I had just finished with that. I was the happiest and healthiest, hardest to kill and most dangerous man I’ve ever been in my entire life. Until 30 minutes later, I got a phone call saying that was all for nothing.”

White shares thoughts on Conor’s injury

Dana White talked about his thoughts on the matter on ‘The Jim Rome Show’, including whether this is the end of Conor.

“The end of McGregor? That’s the big question,” said White, who continued, “Conor will be 36 in July. He’s got a lot of money. I never think guys like that, like Jon Jones, who knows, maybe he’ll fight again, maybe he won’t.

Conor McGregor, maybe he’ll fight again, maybe not. You never know with some of the guys that get to that level. You never know if you’re ever going to see them [fight] again.”

Although he didn’t want to state a new return date for ‘The Notorious’, Dana made it clear that certain factors come together in cases like Jon Jones and McGregor: “Another thing is that as you get older, you get hurt a lot easier. There are more injuries than when you were younger, and you are less willing to risk an injury than when you were young, hungry and didn’t have money.”

White, further explained that the one-time two-time champion, “is hurt right now.” “It’s absolutely real,” he confirmed. He also denied that Conor wanted to renegotiate his contract.
