When you think of Deion Sanders, it’s easy to think about his swagger, his confident manner, and the way he has set about rebuilding the Colorado Buffaloes‘ football program. But that confidence is a facet to Sanders‘ personality that defines him — and it made him into one of the best NFL players of the 1990s.
Before he went into coaching, Sanders was a lockdown cornerback and a kick return specialist. He was the NFL‘s Defensive Player of the Year in 1994 and won Super Bowl titles with the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys — all while driving many around the league crazy with his brazen attitude. Newly-unearthed photos show Sanders at his peak and offer a glimpse into his enduring influence over football.

On Thursday, Colorado football’s official Instagram page shared a multimedia collage of photos and videos from Sanders’ NFL career — including a viral image of Sanders at the 1989 NFL Draft, where the Atlanta Falcons selected him fifth overall.
In the photo, Sanders takes a phone call while donning several gold necklaces and a Starter jacket with the word “Primetime” emblazoned on it — in addition to a gold dollar sign earring in his left ear. The iconic photo was snapped as Sanders was notified that he would be heading to Atlanta, where he played his first five seasons.
Sanders’ braggadocio was evident from the moment he was drafted, but he backed up his behavior with All-Pro play over parts of 14 NFL seasons. He also passed on these qualities to his children — most notably, son Shedeur Sanders, who is the Buffaloes‘ starting quarterback and a Heisman Trophy candidate entering the 2024 NCAA football season.
If Shedeur performs as expected in 2024, he will likely enter the 2025 NFL Draft as a lock to go in the first round — just like his dad did, all those years ago. And there’s a decent bet to be made that he could recreate Deion‘s legendary photo on draft day, continuing the Sanders legacy.
