Tyson Fury‘s refusal to face Oleksandr Usyk at the final pre-fight press conference has sparked a split among fans. Many viewers argue that Fury’s actions indicate he’s already lost the fight for the undisputed heavyweight title.
However, some believe Fury‘s unusual behavior is a clever tactic meant to play mind games before the high-stakes bout in Saudi Arabia. Fury started the day by withdrawing from a scheduled live interview on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.
The drama intensified when Usyk’s team filed a complaint, claiming parts of the Riyadh ring canvas posed a tripping hazard. The situation escalated when Fury refused to engage in the traditional face-to-face confrontation with Usyk.
In contrast, Usyk maintained a firm stare at Fury, only breaking it when it was time for the customary fist-raising and bicep-flexing photos, with the latter avoiding eye contact with the 37-year-old Ukrainian throughout.
Fan reaction
While Fury appeared mostly unemotional, he occasionally smirked, nodded reflectively, and snarled when posing next to Usyk. Fans are divided on whether his behavior reflects fear or a shrewd psychological strategy.
As the showdown between these unbeaten heavyweights looms, Fury’s actions have fueled a heated online debate among fans and amateur body-language experts.
“Fury has already lost, he can’t even look at Usyk, he’s absolutely bricking it,” a fan said.
Another added: “Fury looked scared throughout the press conference”.
“Look at the height difference! Tyson Fury was looking for Usyk‘s eyes but he couldn’t find where he was,” a third joked.
Fury and Usyk will clash for the undisputed world heavyweight championship on Saturday, May 18.
