Murray’s Parents: Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson

The tragic news has left fans and fellow players mourning the loss of a bright and promising athlete whose life was marked by both remarkable achievements and profound personal struggles.

Grayson Murray’s parents released a heartfelt statement on Sunday, revealing that their son’s death was a result of suicide.

They spoke candidly about their grief and the love Grayson received throughout his life:

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare. We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed. We would like to thank the PGA TOUR and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now. Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else. Thank you.”

Grayson Murray battled challenges on & off the course

Grayson Murray’s career in golf began at a young age, marked by significant milestones and impressive victories.

He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships from 2006 to 2008 and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group.

His early promise continued with a standout performance on the Korn Ferry Tour, eventually leading to his full status on the PGA TOUR in the 2016-17 season.

His rookie season saw him clinch a victory at the 2017 Barbasol Championship, cementing his place on the tour.

Despite his success, Murray faced challenges both on and off the course.

After a series of struggles, he found his form again in 2023 on the Korn Ferry Tour, securing two victories that earned him a return to the PGA TOUR.

His most recent triumph came at the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii, where he won in a dramatic playoff.

PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan expressed his deep sorrow in a public statement: “We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words. The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

Commissioner Monahan further shared that he had spoken with Murray’s parents, Eric and Terry Murray, who insisted that tournament play should continue, believing it to be what Grayson would have wanted.

To support the grieving community, grief counselors were made available at the PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events.
