Angel Reese knew there would be an exceptional amount of interest in her rookie season in the WNBA, yet not even she could have envisaged the scrutiny being as intense as it has been of late.

Having been selected by the Chicago Sky with the seventh overall pick, Reese has since faced a campaign of criticism, be it for actions on the court of her behavior off it.

Reese‘s emotional outbursts in press conferences have done little to calm things down, with the media and her detractors picking up on those moments and citing them as an example of why she wasn’t ready for the spotlight of the professional game.

On the court, she’s averaging 12.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, has a streak of double-doubles, and became the first rookie this year to achieve 100 points and 100 rebounds on the campaign as a whole, yet still finds herself being criticized, as per SB Nation.

Why is Angel Reese being targeted?

There is a sense that some people don’t like the incredible amount of interest that has been put on the WNBA since the arrival of Reese and Caitlin Clark.

Those who are negative towards women’s sport are gravitating towards this movement of meanness towards Reese.

There is also a race element to consider, with many taking shots at Reese over Caitlin Clark despite their similarly comparable numbers on the court.

This angle has led to her being seen as a villain deserving of condemnation, while her contemporary, Caitlin Clark, is celebrated as a savior who needs protection.

Reese has faced racist death threats, been derogatorily referred to as “Louisiana hot sauce” by the Los Angeles Times, harassed outside a DC hotel with her Sky teammates, and accused of “assaulting” Clark during a June 16 Sky-Fever game when she attempted to block a shot, accidentally hitting Clark in the head and receiving a flagrant foul.

The replay clearly showed she was going for the ball, but still the abuse came her way.

This is an overwhelming amount for a 22-year-old to handle, regardless of her status, and she doesn’t deserve to have to deal with this.
