On May 4, Jaime Munguia faced Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, vying for the super middleweight titles in a highly anticipated bout.

With support from his trainer Freddie Roach, promoter Oscar de la Hoya, the band Reik, and his team, Munguia stepped into the ring at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, ready to challenge the undisputed champion.

Munguia won the admiration of fans for his spirited performance against Alvarez, as he aimed to become the new king of the 168 lbs division.

The first three rounds saw Munguia confidently trading blows, with many believing he had the upper hand. However, a decisive uppercut from Alvarez in the fourth round shifted the momentum.

A minor injury

Munguia struggled to regain control and ultimately lost the match by unanimous decision. Alvarez retained the WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF belts, marking his fourth successful title defense. Then, Munguia revealed a setback that he believes affected his performance.

“I went to look for it, to win the fight, I worked hard,” he told the Youtube channel ‘Un Round Mas’.

“It’s not an excuse, [but] when there were three weeks left for the fight, in a ‘sparring’ [I suffered] a small cut on my forehead that John Ryder had given me.

“Then I stopped doing four or five ‘sparring’ and maybe it could have been a factor because in the fourth or fifth ’round’ I felt a little tired and lowered the intensity.

“Besides, [Canelo] has a lot of experience, he was hitting my arms, he lowered the intensity of my jab.”
