Jorginho wants the Arsenal board to hand a new long-term contract to manager Mikel Arteta.

With just over a year remaining on his current deal with the Gunners, Arteta, who took the managerial reins in December 2019, disclosed last month that there were no imminent updates on a possible extension.

Arteta’s tenure has brought a sense of renewed optimism and progress to the Emirates Stadium. Guiding the club to their first Champions League quarterfinal in 14 years stands as a testament to his managerial acumen and tactical nous.

Moreover, the palpable satisfaction exuding from the 42-year-old’s demeanour is not lost on anyone, particularly as the Gunners find themselves in a promising position to clinch the Premier League title.

In light of these circumstances, the prevailing expectation is that Arteta, if offered a new contract, would readily accept it. His commitment to the club’s long-term vision, coupled with the rapport he has built with key figures such as sporting director Edu Gaspar, underscores the significance of retaining his services.

Fresh off signing a new contract himself, Jorginho told ESPN about his hope and expectation that Arteta stays.

“I feel he feels good here and I honestly don’t see him going,” he said. “It is really important for the club for him to stay because him Edu, the board, the whole club, they have created something special. I don’t believe he wants to go as well.”

Jorginho’s arrival at Arsenal from Chelsea in January 2023 marked a pivotal moment for the Gunners, bringing with him a wealth of leadership skills and qualities that have proven integral to the club’s recent successes.

Asked how relaxed the managerial situation at the north London outfit is compared to the west London club – where Mauricio Pochettino’s future hangs in the balance – Jorginho said: “You have the direction that you need to go.

“You go in that direction or you are not part of the project. It is very clear. Everyone that is here wants to be in the same direction.”

Arsenal lock horns with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, aiming for a win to keep themselves in pole position of the Premier League.
