Last Saturday, May 4, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fulfilled the predictions of many by defeating Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision.

Though, despite the dominance of the unified champion, who sent his opponent to the canvas during the fourth round, the truth is that Munguia came out of the fight “responsive” and managed to connect with several punches throughout the fight, especially in the opening rounds.

Jake Paul lays out his plan to fight Canelo Alvarez

This caused Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s uncle, Jeff Mayweather, to talk about some problems with the defense of the champion, as reported by Essentially Sports.

Following the fight held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Jeff Mayweather said he was surprised by the amount of punches Canelo took throughout the 12-round contest.

In an interview with Fight Hype, Mayweather noted: “Don’t get me wrong, but I think all these other fights he’s been taking since he fought a really good fighter, it seems like he was just toying with him, it seemed like this fight against Munguia looked like there was going to be a better fight.”

When questioned if at any point in the fight it seemed like Canelo was in trouble, Jeff responded: “No, it’s just the fact that he took more punches than he thought he would.”

He continued: “At first, it looked like Munguia had a chance to win the fight. But once Canelo started going back to the old Canelo, we saw that all of a sudden everything started to change.”

What’s next for Canelo Alvarez’s career?

After one more win and the fourth successful defense of his super middleweight titles, Alvarez‘s imminent opponent should be David Benavidez.

However, in an interview after his win against Munguia, Canelo Alvarez left his future up in the air and unresolved.

“I don’t know at the moment. I’m going to rest, I’m going to enjoy my family,” Canelo responded to journalist Jim Gray’s question in the ring at T-Mobile Arena.

“If the money is right, I can fight right now. I don’t give a f*ck. I fought everybody, they said I’m not going to fight, I fought all of them. So now I can do whatever I want,” Alvarez added.

Benavidez, who was in the front rows for the fight, walked over to meet Canelo face to face and they exchanged some words that were far from friendly.

Benavidez already has a commitment, set to step into the ring against Oleksandr Gvozdyk at 175 pounds next month and, in Canelo‘s words, someone has to offer him $200 million to step into the ring alongside Benavidez, who appears to be the next natural challenger for Alvarez.
