Plans to close over a hundred restaurants “could impact” a much loved Huddersfield pub, it has been confirmed.

The Aspley at St Andrew’s Road is owned by hospitality giant, Whitbread, as part of its Table Table chain. The company, which also owns Premier Inn and brands such as Beefeater and Brewers Fayre, recently announced plans to replace 112 of its “lower-returning” branded restaurants with hotel rooms.

A further 126 restaurants will be sold over the next two years, with the sales of 21 restaurants agreed for £28m. The company says the move will result in the loss of around 1,500 members of staff from a 37,000-strong workforce.

While the plans remain subject to consultation, Whitbread confirmed that its proposals “could impact” the Huddersfield restaurant. A spokesperson continued: “We recognise that this will be unsettling for our team members, and we are providing them with dedicated support.

“We are committed to working hard to enable as many as possible of our affected team members to stay with us by either transferring into new roles, or by taking up other vacancies across the business more broadly through our existing recruitment activity.”

At present, The Aspley remains open and trading.
