Roy Keane torched Scotland’s players for ‘letting down supporters’ after their 5-1 destruction by Germany – and ripped into Andy Robertson for his post-match comments.

His scathing criticism was backed up by Graeme Souness, who thinks Scotland ‘took a beating’ on a miserable opening night in Munich.

Scotland were 3-0 down and left with 10 men after a disastrous first half and couldn’t muster much of a response as Germany’s attacking talents ran riot

Andy Robertson lamented a lack of aggression after the game and vowed that Scotland would be angry with themselves on Saturday morning.

Keane could hardly believe what he had heard. ‘Andy Robertson spoke at the end of the game and said they had a game plan. It’s all well and good having a plan,’ he told ITV Sport.

‘He said they weren’t aggressive enough. You have to be aggressive in a game of football. When you’re up against opposition who are much stronger than you, being aggressive is part of being a footballer.

‘My goodness, when you’re playing at this level, you’ve got to hit people. Hit them properly, hit them aggressively, do it in the right way.

‘If you step off them like Scotland did tonight… It’s no good talking after the game saying we had a game plan. It’s rubbish! Andy Robertson… it’s all just rubbish coming out.

‘You knew before the game what was at stake and after the game it’s no good saying “we’ll regroup and be angry tomorrow.” You should be angry for a long time.

‘They spoke before the game about creating history – they’re creating history by playing as bad as that and letting their manager and supporters down.’

He had choice words for Ryan Porteous, whose two-footed foul on Ilkay Gundogan saw Germany handed a penalty in the minutes before half-time.

Keane said: ‘That was madness that tackle, the penalty and the sending-off. You’ve got to do it in the right way. Being aggressive is part of football. Football is a physical game and they didn’t lay a glove on them.’

Scotland were always going to face an uphill battle against the hosts, who have a point to prove after a string of tournament disappointments.

Armed with German football’s player of the year Florian Wirtz, the whirring feet of Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, and the pristine quality of Ilkkay Gundogan, Steve Clarke’s men faced a superior force.

Graeme Souness warned that Scotland have to pick themselves up immeidately and move on to the next fixture against Switzerland.

‘You can get beat and you can get BEAT. They took a beating tonight. It’s hard to take any positives form tonight but he [Steve Clarke] has to,’ Souness told ITV Sport.

‘Tournament football, you don’t have time off. They start tomorrow morning preparing for the next game.’
