A trial date has been set for a teenage boy accused of a glass attack at a Sheffield school which sent shockwaves across the city.

The 17-year-old – who cannot be named for legal reasons – made his first appearance at Sheffield Crown Court on Friday charged with three counts of attempted grievous bodily harm following the incident at Birley Academy on May 1. He is also charged with possession of a blade or sharply pointed article on school premises.

Emergency services attended the scene following reports of an incident involving a sharp object – understood to have been a piece of glass – at the school in Birley Lane. Two women in their 20s and a child suffered minor injuries that did not need hospital treatment.

The school was plunged into lockdown following the incident.

As he appeared in court over a video link from a Young Offenders’ Institution, the boy was addressed by Recorder of Sheffield, His Honour Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, who said he would explain what would happen at the end of the short plea, trial and preparation hearing.

The boy was not required to enter pleas to the charges.

A further plea, trial and preparation hearing was set for July 12 this year, and a trial date was set for August 5, with a time estimate of five days. The case was adjourned for reports to take place. The boy was remanded into custody.
