The New York Jets hit a new low on Monday Night Football, losing by 21 points to the previously 3-4 Los Angeles Chargers, while the offense could only muster six total points.
Quarterback Zach Wilson‘s numbers don’t look overly terrible, but a big chunk of his yardage and completed passes came once the game was well out of reach. Even with garbage time on his side, he couldn’t guide his offense to a single touchdown. He also took eight sacks and lost two fumbles.
Robert Saleh: Not even close to Zach Wilson’s worst game
It’s more of the same from Wilson. The low bar he has set led people to be content if he just wouldn’t turn the ball over so many times, which is something he avoided over the past month or so. During the postgame press conference, head coach Robert Saleh was asked if this was a step back for Wilson.
Fans took his words as him essentially admitting that Wilson’s worst games have been so bad, that scoring six points in a game doesn’t even come close to being terrible by his standards.
While Wilson struggled, the offense as a whole has just looked broken for most of the season. The offensive line can’t pass block effectively, receivers other than Garrett Wilson don’t get open and the overall offensive scheme doesn’t seem to maximize its players’ talents.
Considering current Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett guided the Denver Broncos to an NFL-worst scoring season in terms of points last year, this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. When prompted on whether the team could look to make a change there, Saleh was emphatic.
It would be asinine to not make any sort of changes – either with the scheme, coaching or personnel – following a performance like this and the season hanging in the balance. Perhaps the Jets are just treading water until Aaron Rodgers makes his unprecedented return.
