Mason Greenwood undertook his first public training session as a Getafe player this morning after completing his deadline day move to the LaLiga side.

Greenwood has not played competitive football since December 2021 following his suspension at Manchester United in the wake of his arrest in January 2022.

The player was charged with allegations of attempted rape and assault, but these charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023 following the withdrawal of key witnesses.

Man United completed their internal investigation into the player’s conduct in August and mutually agreed with the 21-year-old forward that his career should ‘recommence’ away from Old Trafford

Getafe will not be paying a fee for the forward, but will cover a small contribution for his wages for the duration of the loan.

The player is set to be presented as a player at the Spanish side on Tuesday evening.

Greenwood will wear the No 12 shirt during his time at the LaLiga outfit, who currently sit 14th in the table following a patchy start to their 2023/24 campaign.

The player was welcomed to training by the club’s social media account, with a video posted to X (formerly Twitter) on the side’s English-language account which showed Greenwood stepping onto the pitch with his new team-mates ahead of the open session.

The video was shared with the caption: ‘We love you (Mason Greenwood’, tagging the player and adding multiple heart emojis.

Greenwood’s loan deal with Getafe is thought to include a break clause which would allow the side to send the player back to United during the January window if unhappy with how the move has developed.

Reaction to Greenwood’s signing as the window closed to call time on the summer’s business saw a domestic abuse charity in Spain criticise the club’s move for the player.

‘If you’re a public-facing organisation like Getafe there is no excuse to take a neutral stance on violence against women,’ a statement shared by the Ana Bella Foundation said. ‘You must take moral responsibility.’

But his new coach Jose Bordalas was quick to defend the actions of his club, admitting that it was a ‘delicate situation’ to navigate.

‘Everyone knows what happened and appropriate measures were taken. Everyone knows how it ended, with a non-convictory sentence,’ Bordalas said.

‘He is a footballer of a very high level and arrives at Getafe with enormous enthusiasm.’

Unable to take part in training at Carrington during his suspension, Greenwood organised private training sessions both in Manchester, and in Dubai, were he was joined by former team-mate Anthony Elanga, and Udinese defender James Abankwah.
