Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs suffered a knee injury during a team practice on Thursday, and the All-Pro defensive back is set to miss the remainder of the 2023 NFL season.
The Cowboys thought that Diggs, who signed a $97 million contract extension over summer, suffered an ACL injury after he underwent initial tests. An MRI has since confirmed the injury in a huge blow to the Dallas defense.
Diggs injured early in practice
Diggs‘ injury occurred during the one-on-one portion of the Cowboys‘ practice on Thursday, as Dallas continues preparations for its Week 3 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. After practice concluded, Diggs was reportedly seen in the Dallas locker room walking with the help of crutches.
A long-term injury to Diggs could be devastating for the Cowboys’ defense, which has allowed only 10 points through two games and is regarded as the best unit in the entire NFL. Diggs, a two-time Pro Bowl selection at cornerback, recorded an NFL-best 11 interceptions in 2021 while being named to his first All-Pro team. In 2022, he made a career-high 59 tackles, and he signed a five-year extension in July. The 25-year-old had already made one interception and recorded four tackles in 2023.

Prescott asks for prayers
Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott spoke to the media after Thursday’s practice and acknowledged Diggs was worse for wear following the session.
“Some of you saw (Diggs) leaving the field, so prayers for him,” Prescott said. “Simple as that.”
The onus is now on Prescott and the Dallas offense to step up its game even more to compensate for the loss of a key defensive cog. Prescott tossed two touchdowns in the Cowboys‘ Week 2 win over the visiting New York Jets, and Dallas has opened as a 12.5-point favorite against the 0-2 Cardinals this weekend.
